We continued south on I-29 to St. Joseph, MO, outrunning a tremendous storm. Skies were incredibly black, and we learned later a tornado had touched down along our path … but luckily behind us. We took the Kansas City beltway (I-435) southeast around the city and got off in Independence to take in a Harry Truman sight. There are many, since he spent all but his White House days there. We decided on his home, which was quite attractive and the ranger made us much more knowledgeable about our 24th president.
We took I-70 east through Columbia, MO, where we stopped off for a Steak 'N Shake, which ranked 2nd on our list of best meals this trip. We arrived home in St. Louis in early afternoon. We put 3600 miles on our car during our 9-night trip (including "standing still" in Denver for 3 nights). WAY too ambitious a road trip, in my humble opinion.
