This morning we arise and head over to our Build Day here in Salem, which is unique in that we are not the only group working with this affiliate, but we also get a tour of the city's art morals throughout the city to help with beautification. With a large group of probably 40 folks, its difficult to hear all the details about all of the morals, but they sure do prove to be very beautiful and meaningful, some of which were completed by famous artists--don't ask me which ones, I'm no Fact Finder 😉
After our moral tour, talk, and picture taking, we walk our way back to the storage warehouse we will be working out of and stand in a circle and go around giving our names, which group we are with, and what we are excited about for the day. We then count off and go assigned to different groups. I get assigned to stay here at the warehouse where we will be working on painting headboards for children's beds. They found that many times when families move into their new, affordable home, they have a hard time finding affordable furniture. With this initiative, the children can
come and pick out the headboard of their choice! What a faun task for the day!
After some debate (sunflowers? stripes? tie dye?) and thinking, I decide to freehand paint the Starry Night sky. IT has always been a favorite of mine since grade school so I thought maybe a child in grade school would appreciate my "masterpiece" in their room. Let's get them cultured, eh? So I get to work and maybe a little too far into the zone as I strive to replicate the image on my phone that I googled, paying close attention to every detail and change in color, texture, lighting, etc. A few friends stop by and chat about my work, as I work next to Raffi. Sarah fills me in on her project outside and I paint away. I take breaks to go in to the other room to see how Jana and Aiden's headboards are coming along--that room is full of sunflowers, polka dots, and even Winnie the Pooh! Very creative and talented folks up in this place! It sure is nice to have a creative outlet and get to paint again--I've missed it! The only other break I took out of
Witch House
Only building still standing with ties to the Witch Trials--now a museum I got to explore! Smells funky! the zone was when we were mandated to eat pizza and soda on the ground outside--what ashame! And boy was that pizza good! Back into the zone I go!
The other projects and painters start to conclude around 3pm and push through until my project is done around 4pm--one of the last to leave! I make a quick stop at Walgreens and head back to the host to grab my shower stuff before heading to the Y. After the shower, I take advantage of the sunny afternoon and walk around town, exploring more shops with creepy dolls and stopping for a beer outside a cafe where I chat with NJ and one of her grad school friends. Noah stops by and is journaling and other team members stop in and out as well. We also pop into a bike shop where I score some sweet socks and an even sweeter witch on a bicycle sticker :D I have to convince myself to buy the socks since money is tight, but when else can you buy sweet socks from a witch bike shop?!
We work our way back to the host and I work my way back out on
the town with Mora and another once the sun goes down. We wanted to see the statue from "Bewitched" which we succeed in and then sit outside by the courtyard and enjoy some conversation. I am also eager to try to see Manders again as well, so I head over to Notch Brewery, where I am met by Kristi, Amanda, and a friend. We chat a bit, but they are almost done their beers so they head out shortly afterwards (work night? whats that?!). Kristi, however had some things on her mind so I grab a beer and we chat for a bit. She fills me in on her B&B application process and experience--from what she tells me, it wasn't the warmest or as supportive as she would have liked. This surprises me, but then again, Kristi is known to have very strong opinions and be vocal about them--a blessing and a curse you could say, but I love her all the same! We work our way back to the host and find our sleeping bags and tuck ourselves in for the night.
