DDN in Morristown
with the old rental car. Pretty bad weather. On Monday/Tuesday, I enjoyed a nice stay in Stowe, a small town about 40 km East of Burlington in the Vermont mountains, with very good hotels and excellent restaurants (and many tourists). Stowe is famous as skiing place with nice slopes on Mount Mansfield (4800 ft high), as an artist's retreat with many nice sculptures placed around the town, and because the Trapp-family (known from the 'Sound of Music' movie) have located here their retreat (better hotel complex). Everything is perfectly done - for my taste a bit too perfect, I escaped for dinner to the next place Morristown which is not touristic at all and still served me an excellent black-bean burger with life Country&Western music.
Actually, I ended up in Stowe due to its nice little airport - I had a long list of airports to visit, and in Morristown-Stowe was just the right combination of nice landscape, hotel and car availability, plus I had bad weather that prevented me from continuing the planned trip. And actually, the 15 minute flight from Burlington to Morristown led to the most dangerous situation of the trip so far - bad preparation from my side was the key factor. Shouldn't underestimate
Stowe with Mount Mansfield
beautiful countryside with nice forests short flights in unfamiliar terrain!
Yesterday, after hiking half way up to Mount Mansfield and an excellent brunch, I flew to Boston Hanscomb, the GA airfield of Boston in the West of town (ex USAF base, where the famous atmospheric transmission files were generated in the long past). Busy airport with all sort of traffic, including some private jet fighters.
Regina arrived here in Boston just after lunch, and after some nice visit of Boston downtown (with the remarkably expensive parking space of $18/hour! - we stayed only 30 min there), we had our traditional New England lobster dinner in the harbor area - completely non-touristic, but very nice.
Tomorrow we plan first a flight to the GA airport of New York (Teterboro in New Jersey), mainly to refuel and to refresh ourselves, and then along the Manhattan Skyline and via the Statue of Liberty to the South, with Kitty Hawk 'First Flight Airport' as target. More about that when its done.
