Today’s entry will be short as we only did one thing. However, that one thing was one of the highlights of the trip. We got up early because we needed to catch a 10 am ferry to Chebeaque Island. It is north of Portland and is the second to last ferry stop before it turns around. You may ask why did we choose this island? The answer is quite simple Sunday Jazz Brunch.
It was another perfect day, not a cloud in the sky, warm about 70 with a light breeze and low humidity. The ferry was pretty crowded, but there were several stops along the way so by the time we go to Chebeaque Island the ferry crowed had thin. We enjoyed the sun, sea breeze and the scenery as we chugged along the bay. It normally takes about 2 hours, but we made very good time and got there 50 minutes ahead of schedule. The shuttle to take us to the brunch was not schedule to arrive until noon. As luck would have it, fortune smiled upon us this day. There were several other people headed to the Inn for a wedding and had over 100 wedding cupcakes.
The cupcake ladies last name just happened to be Wright, not relevant but interesting. In any event she called the inn and arranged for the shuttle to pick us up early.
We were headed for the Chebeaque Island Inn. When we got there it was everything we had hoped for. In fact, it may just be the sight of Jerry’s 50
th birthday get-a-way. I don’t really have a lot to say, it was a wonderful day and the food was perfect, probably the best Lobster Benedict I have ever had and had more than enough hollandaise sauce.
The other interesting thing was our conversation with the staff. Two of them were from Easter Europe, Tavi from Romania (Transylvania to be exact) and a woman whose name I did not get from Sofia Bulgaria. They were both very nice and here on work visa’s. However, I fear they are being taken advantage of as they have to pay for their room and board out of their minimum wage jobs so the only money they make is on tips. The service was great so we tipped well, it didn’t hurt that Tavi was very cute.
We had several hours
to spend before our 4:15 ferry arrived. It wasn’t hard, we watched the wedding which was right in front of where we were having brunch (very short and very bad ceremony, definitely marrying for money) and the three bottles of wine one of which was on the veranda didn’t hurt either. We just sat drank wine and looked out at the water, best wine thirty ever.
At 3:45 the shuttle to take us to the Ferry arrived and we climbed aboard, not really wanting to leave this little bit of paradise. Back on the ferry we again enjoyed the sun, sea breeze and some conversation with a young couple originally from Kansas. Back on dry land we headed back to the room to just relax and watch the ferry from Nova Scotia cum in. Our final dinner of the trip would be traditional Maine; we went to the Portland Lobster Co. a large lobster shack on the piers. Jerry had a lobster role and I had the Maine Lobster dinner, whole lobster, corn on the cob, potato, etc. The lobster was great, but Jerry thought the lobster roll at 3 buoys was much better.
After dinner we strolled
down the water front stopped in and had some ice cream, Jerry had two scoops of butter pecan and I had a scoop each of butter pecan, salty caramel, and praline. It was very tasty and it was a bit humid out so a perfect end to the evening. From there it was back to the hotel and bed.
Like I say a short entry but a great day.
