We take Amtrak from Boston to Portland, Maine. We arrive at 2:40 PM but our Airbnb will not let us in until 4 PM. We walk to Bunker Brewery dragging our luggage behind us. The brewery is quiet and we find a table outside. We enjoy the beer until it is time to call an Uber to take us to our Airbnb. We rented a one bedroom, one bath unit with a living room and kitchen. After settling in we walk to Whole Foods to buy supplies for breakfast and tonight’s dinner, We made dinner then relaxed and watched television.Mark was able to hook the tv up to our home Dish account and we were able to watch last weeks 60 Minutes. The show was about 9-11. So appropriate since we just visited the 9-11 museum. The show was so sad and well done.
Today is raining and will be all day long. We decide to go out to lunch for lobster rolls then do a pub crawl. Brad, Christopher, Christie and Laura were all here together and recommended Highroller Lobster as the best lobster rolls in Portland. We walk in the rain to the restaurant which is busy and has
a 25 minute wait. I check out the shops on the street while we wait. The shops are expensive and I buy nothing. Once seated we are told to order and pay online and to enter our table number 10 when we order. It must have taken us 10 to 15 minutes to get our online order done. Giving our order to the waiter would have been so much faster and we could have asked questions. We order two lobster rolls and a couple of beers. The lobster rolls were great. We then head out on our beer crawl. Again we get advice from the kids as to which breweries to visit. There are a lot of them and all within walking distance. We thought about taking a beer trolley tour for $85 each but we decide to walk in the rain instead. So we visit Gritty McDuff's Brew Pub an old pub then Goodfire the kid’s favorite brewery. At every stop Mark order’s a dark and I order a larger. Lone Pine Brewery is across the street from Goodfire which is convenient. On our way to our last brewery Belleflower we stop at Dean’s Sweets and buy some delicious
chocolate. We pick up a pizza at Otto’s and take it to our Airbnb to eat. A long day with a lot of beer and walking.
It is Friday and our last full day of this vacation. No rain but it is cold and windy. We walk to Casio Baylines at the pier. We buy cheap tickets for the ferry to Peaks Island. There are many islands but we choose this one to visit for two reasons. One reason is it is a short ferry ride only 17 minutes and the second reason is they have a bike rental shop. We like to ride bikes when we are on vacation. The ferry leaves once a hour and we take the 11:15 ferry. The ferry also takes cars as well as people. When we arrive we head straight to the Island Lobster Co. It is a short walk from the ferry. A Celebrity cruise ship is in town and we try to beat all the cruise passengers to the restaurant. We beat a large group of cruise passengers to the restaurant. The restaurant is on the water and has views of the port and Portland. We had everything for lunch, lobster
rolls, oysters, shrimp, scallops and cod served with french fries. After lunch we walk to Brad and Wyatt’s Bike Shop to rent bikes. We rent bikes for two hours for $20 for each bike which includes helmets. We ride around the island stopping first at a view point. We brought half bottle of wine with us and we enjoy the wine while watching the beautiful view. Our next stop is a bunker from World War II. It is spooky and dark but there are other tourists at the bunker. The houses on the island are beautiful. We ride around the entire island then return our bikes to Brad. We catch the 2:45 ferry back to Portland. We walk back to our Airbnb and decide to relax the rest of the day before flying back to Kansas City to spend two weeks with Rachel, Chris and Lyla. Rachel asked Lyla where we were and she said we are on an airplane. She thinks we have been on the plane for two weeks. When asked when we are going to land she said on her birthday. We told here when we left we would be back for her second birthday and she
remembered. We took an Uber to the airport and off we go back to Kansas City.
