Final day on the road except for the trip to the airport which is about 25 minutes from the hotel. Today we were headed west and passed through Biloxi again. This time we went to the downtown which is quite small but there is a small arts district with cute homes and shops. Travelled along the coast road where there are many very beautiful large homes. Communities along the way included Gulfport, Long Beach and Pass Christian. Many large homes have survived the hurricanes but there are also empty lots with gate posts, driveways but nothing else. There is very little elevation between the ocean and the lots so many homes are built on stilts. Interesting also to note the roof styles. It seems that hip roofs are better able to sustain the winds rather than solid gable ends. Another long bridge and we found ourselves in a cute little town (less touristy) where we found a cute little bakery and coffee shop. The coffee was free because we arrived before they were open but we did buy some very nice muffins at the bakery which was owned by the same people. The next community was Waveland and we

House on Stilts then headed inland more eventually finding us in Bayou country. Stopped at a small store at the edge of the Bayou which is basically very flat land with roads which are just a few feet above the water level. The Bayou is intersected by navigable canals. From there it was into New Orleans to our hotel. Quite a contrast from the quiet driving and then into 5 lane roads and bridges. However, the GPS did get us to our hotel with only one U-turn because of new road construction. The downside to our hotel location is there are no real restaurants close by so dinner will likely be at the Waffle House.
