My New Trunk and the Old Trunk
I have already peeled the latch and luggage rack off of the old trunk. The new one is bigger and taller. 18 JUNE 2011 -- Well my 1st trunk's time was up. When the lid broke I knew I needed a new trunk, I had been kind of looking for one because my Nolan103 helmet that I bought this year would not fit in this trunk. The trunk was too short, I needed a taller trunk. The helmet is 11 inches tall. The trunk lasted me a good 3 years and I got more than my monies worth out of it.
Anyway I searched and searched and finally settled on this trunk from ebay vendor Halfpricetrade. The trunk was $88 with $25 shipping and handling charges. Here is the text from the ebay auction:

The bottom of the New Trunk
You can see the built in handle. The hole is where the mounting screw comes thru. Removing that one screw will allow the case to come off the mounting plate. and will last much longer.
This Great luggage trunk features:

What the listing doesn't mention is that the trunk is detachable from the mounting plate and it has a built in handle to carry it. The big red thing is not a light, just reflective material. I didn't want a light.
I ordered the trunk on Friday and heard nothing from the vendor, on Tuesday I emailed them asking to confirm they got the payment and the product was shipping. I never recieved a response. But the trunk was on the way and delivered on Thursday. It was more awesome than I thought it would be. The measurements were correct, there is plenty of room for the helmet. My laptop fits
Marking the mounting holes in the bracket.
The front 2 original mounting holes in the bracket matched perfect to the mounting plate that came with the top case, however I need to drill a couple toward the back. very nicely on the bottom, with room to spare on all sides. It was crowded in the previous trunk. So I was very happy with the new trunk. Now I just needed to get it installed.
I had bought a mounting bracket for my first trunk that used the detachable sideplates I had. I planned on using this bracket for the new trunk. I was amazed when I put the mounting plate down and two of the holes of the bracket and plate matched up perfectly. Awsome, that will make aligning the 2 so they are straight with each other very easy. Throwing bolts into those holes I marked a couple slots in the back so I would know where to drill holes to secure the back of the plate. I drilled the plate when it was still attached to Effie. So I put a trash bag under it to collect the metal shavings.
The hardware kit that came with the trunk had 4 cap bolts and 4 small fender washers. I found some more in my little shop and put some on the bottom and bigger ones to use in the back of the bracket. For info
Mounting Plate bolted to the Bracket.
The slot in the back is matched up a ledge on the tour pac. The one nut on this bracket secures the whole topcase to the bracket. That is kind of scary. on the bracket and where I got it look in the this blog:
08 Trunk installation on my 2005 883 Harley Davidson Sportster, Effie.
It also came with some wierd shaped brackets that must be used to mount the plate on luggage rack that has bars.
After getting the plate on the bracket, then it was sitting the new trunk in the plate and putting in one bolt.
I really like the trunk. It matches my saddlebags well I think. They kind of look like a set. I haven't gone for a ride yet, but thats coming.
Effies odometer says 130, 582 miles. We'll see how long this one lasts.
