Theoretically, things were supposed to slow down this week, but not with this crowd. One of my colleagues organized two afternoons of meetings so that we could each speak to the rest of the group about our own research, another volunteered to make arrangments for everyone to go to Shangri-La (the heiress Doris Duke’s Islamic art collection). while a third set up a trip to the Bishop Museum (Hawaiian culture).
The weather here strikes a midwesterner as very unusual. The sun is intense (like Houston, for you family members). But when there are trade winds, you don’t feel the sun because the cool wind makes it very pleasant. I am here during the part of the summer when the trade winds get rather iffy and it does get hot and humid. But so far the hot spells haven’t lasted very long.
Possibly the main reason I like Hawaii, however: the mosquitos here do not seem to find me very delicious!
