Pearl Harbor
Entrance to Pearl Harbor with the kids We started our day at Pearl Harbor! Quite an adventure for all of us. This was an incredible day starting out with the museum and the memorial itself. I know the kids were in awe, as we were, of what this represented and what this meant to us as Americans but more importantly that this event happened right where we were standing. The Marine Corp band played patriotic songs while we were waiting our turn to view the movie before entering the USS Arizona Memorial. Being memorial day, we wanted to honor the fallen soilders and the kids all brought their lei's from the Luau the night before to put at the memorial.
Carter put his lei at the Marine Corp site of fallen soilders. We all stood quietly in our own solitude and said a prayer, and moment of silence for the entombed men below us. It was an ominous feeling. The children were reverant as we entered and toured the memorial. They were very curious to see what all this represented. Garrett said that he could see the oil spots on the water with his polarized sunglasses. He couldn't believe that after 65 years there is still
Pearl Harbor
The museum miniature oil leaking from it's hull. None of us could believe it. It was hard to imagine this.
The memorial is a reef now with fish below the hull and a chance to view them from above. It's life renewing itself. It's a natural reef that has been born of time sitting at the bottom of Pearl Harbor.
The kids enjoyed the museum and the headphones that depicted the story of what really happened. I especially enjoyed the voice, Ernest Borgenine who did an excellent job of informing us of the details of Pearl Harbor and how it happened. When the roar of planes and heavy artillery are in the head phones, it's hard not to look up immediately half expecting to see enemy planes overhead. I can't imagine what it must have been like. Many people at the monument come to pay their respects. I am so glad that we had this opportunity to take the children on such an important day, Memorial Day, for all American's to honor their soilders.
