Golf day!
Today Greg and I got up early and headed to
Olomana Golf Links for our 7:40 tee time. I was extremely apprehensive since I haven't touched a golf club in about three months
and my knee is acting up lately. We made a pact in advance to ignore our scores and concentrate on the amazing experience of golf in Hawai'i no matter how play goes. This was, of course, a good idea. Objectively, we really didn't need it; I played quite well enough considering the aforementioned circumstances, and I think Greg plays pretty well, period. But we rarely view our own game objectively, so the pact came in handy on a few holes after all.
I do wish to state for the record that I sank a 15-foot putt and an 18-foot putt. I had a few drives that were shaped like drives (75- to 100-yard mini-drives, anyway). We got a cart (everybody gets a cart), so my knee wasn't a big issue. I called it a day after the front nine. Once fatigue sets in, I can't maintain a stable platform and all hope is lost. I rode around the back nine and took pictures instead, so my
gain is your gain.
We loved this course! It is legitimately challenging (i.e., to people who may actually play golf), yet unpretentious. We didn't feel out-of-place playing here. It wasn't crowded at all, and we managed not to get in anybody's way. And, most importantly, it's in Hawai'i.
After golf, Greg and I headed into Kailua town for a few errands. Over Greg's objections, I took the liberty of purchasing an inexpensive shower head to replace the one in our beach house. (He thought it was presumptuous, which it was, but I intended to leave the old one in case the owners
really wanted to change it back.)
Mom had reported that our advance grocery shopper left us "hardly any" vegetables, so we went to a hippie grocery to stock way up on produce and a few other food items. When we got home, I discovered both crispers packed full of lettuce, bok choy, tomatoes, Japanese eggplant and more. I assumed mom had overlooked the crispers, but when we asked her about it later, she replied, "yes, I saw the crispers... hardly any vegetables!" I guess that's a mom and her veggies for ya.
We got back to find Kini, one of the proprietors of this fine rental establishment, had stopped by to check out the place. Barb mentioned to him that the "hot" tub wasn't, and after some investigation he determined that a fuse had blown, presumably, he said, in the power surge after the earthquake last week. He came back a while later with a new fuse and we should have hot tubbin' opportunities by tomorrow. I was also able to secure advance permission to install my new shower head!
Then, more sand. Sand! Wading, getting pushed around by waves, quasi-bodysurfing, exfoliating and general wallowing in surf. Sand sand sand!
For dinner, fixed hamburgers, hot dogs and grilled SpamĀ® which I prepared using some dry pork spice rub I found in the cupboard. Hey, SpamĀ®'s pork. It turned out great. Served with plenty of veggies.
