Amazingly with all the noise of the next door Queen Kapiolani Hotel parking, valet and luggage areas as well as various construction work nearby we managed a sleep in and Martin slept till 9-30am.
Our plan today was to take the blue Waikiki trolley on the South East corner tour of the island. We thought 11am would be great, however after a slow lazy morning we managed the 1-36pm departure. We chose to get this double decker bus at its third stop which is at the Duke statue along Waikiki beach. After some very assertive lining up we managed to get a seat on the top facing the coast.
This is a 2.5 hour round trip, with informative commentary and two stops for photos. You can pay a single $20- fee or purchase a multi line ticket like we did for 7 days. Initially this line goes up into the Kahala suburbs and past a lot of schools both private and public. Most of the private are Catholic schools beside the usual beautiful Catholic church. Lots of nice shops and gorgeous properties in the multi millions, complete with tennis courts and swimming pools. We passed the local
golf course and we were told that to join it would cost $80,000, $800- a month membership fees, and each game was worth $400- in green fees. All the rich and famous have houses in this area, amongst them Sylvester Stallone, Oprah Winfrey, and the guy who own South Korea airlines.
The drive took us along the coast line with the most gorgeous blue sea, dry barren hills and sheer cliffs and beaches of golden sands. Loads of people out and about today, it was a Sunday, tourists and locals alike. People fishing off the rocks, surfing, snorkelling, paragliding , hiking and swimming. You can take TheBus to these areas as well, but a lot of people hire cars and drive and of course there are numerous tour companies wanting to take your money for their expertise.
Two significant points of interest at Hanauma Bay and The Blowhole. Also near the blowhole is the beach where the scene from the movie "From Here to Eternity" with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr shocked the world with the pair of them cavorting near naked on the waters edge.
Hanauma Bay is one of the most significant spots for snorkelling and
diving with crystal clear water, rocky reef type areas and a sandy beach with shade. As its a marine park you must pay an entry fee of $7-50 but you can get there by the #22 TheBus rather than use a tour company if you want. You look down onto the bay from high cliffs with a easy walk way down. It's closed on Tuesday to allow the place to rest and recover.
The blow hole was not that significant today as in the summer months the surf is minimal and the blowhole required huge waves which are forced under a rock and out through a hole. This area also is significant for humpback whales who come and breed and have babies in these waters from December to May on migration from Antarctica where they live the rest of the time.
Tonight's tea was bought from The Food Pantry on Kuhio Ave which is a great little supermarket. Pork steaks and veges and cooked at the hostel. Was wanting a meal we are used to and loads of veges. Tonight we also have free beers as the 2 huge fridges were cleaned out yesterday and anything not named
was thrown out and all the unnamed alcohol has been put into the door for a help yourself. Thanks we will. Pork must be local, 5 steaks for $7- around 1kg of meat, 1 beef steak around 250gms was $15-. There is a dairy industry here but they have little beef cattle.
Desserts such as donuts, cakes, brownies, cheesecakes and muffins are a big thing, huge sections in the supermarket devoted to this.
