Today I check out of Old Lahaina House and head off to the retreat that I came for.
Dont have to check in until 5pm so thought I would take a drive to Hana which is one of the things to do while you are here and it will fill in the day, and because I so like to drive on the wrong side of the road!
So it is 50 miles to Hana which is on the far east side of Maui, I was staying on the west side. The travel guide says "You have never experienced anything quite like the twisting, turning, spectacular road to Hana." Yep, I agree. I thought the Great Ocean road had a lot of twists and turns, then NZ beat that, well the road to Hana beats them ALL!!! I got car sick and I was driving for heavens sake! 50 miles at maximum 20 mph adds up to a long drive, add on stopping to see the sights and you have a full day out.
Stoped at Paia at the
Hana Picnic Lunchon Co. and bought my little picnic lunch and my audio tour CD and headed off. The CD was great and
told you the history, the stops, what to look for etc. Lots of it was on mile markers. Going to Hana the mile markers count upwards (but you don't actually know how many miles it actually is so you never know when you are going to get there) then coming back they count down, very strange. Lots of little walks to stop at along the way and sights to see. Lots of traffic going both ways. A few very frustrated locals who just want to get past you and make it very well known that they are not happy.
All in all it was a nice drive but it rained most of the day and feeling car sick for a lot of it did put a dampener on it. Some amazing views though and so glad I got to see that side of the island. Picked up an old guy, Tommy, 5 miles from Hana who was standing on the side of the road with a "gas" can and was heading into town to get gas for his generator or something. He looked harmless and kind of stopped without thinking, but he was so lovely and we chatted and
he told me about the area.
I filled up with "gas" today, wow how can filling up with petrol even be such a different experience in another country. Everything I seem to do here is a learning experience. I used coins today to pay for something for the first time, cos I haven't quite worked those out. They don't have numbers on them like ours do. If I put my glasses on and look in good light I can read something on them but still freaks me a bit. Quarters, dimes etc, all a new language!
Drove back from Hana to
Lumeria Retreat and wow, it looks just like in the photos on the website! It is spectacular. My room is beautiful, I feel like a queen. Checked in and then went over to the retreat check in. OMG I met Karen Drucker!!!!!!! I have been a "fan" of hers for 6 years and I cant believe I am finally here meeting her. Lisa who has conducted all the communications it also lovely. There are 18 women plus Karen and Lisa, 2 from Hawaii and the rest from "the mainland", and be from Oz.
Had dinner and then
into our first session. Karen sang lots of her songs while we got into the theme of the retreat and we got to get to know the people sitting around us. Everyone seems very like minded and very open and lovely. We will see what tomorrow brings, with much excitement.
Love, Grace and Gratitude, until tomorrow
