Day 5
Kym wanted fried ham and pineapple for brekky so cooking on our Lanai we enjoyed another Hawaiian themed breakfast. Our little green friends joined us again.
We booked a Manta Ray Night Snorkel and decided to do a late big lunch as we were leaving for the snorkel at 5pm. I also wanted a pair of orthopaedic sneakers for some planned hiking later in the trip. A quick trip beach into the township of Kona and we were asked if we wanted any drugs, well they asked Kym hahaha. Same thing happened when we were in New York.. the dude here was carrying a clear glass jar full of green buds. We often smelled the aroma in all different places over Hawai'i. After looking up if it was legal or not it seemed it was a misdemeanor (with a hefty fine) but it was a way of life for a lot of Hawaiians so it was pretty relaxed here. (And no, we did not take the random dude up on the offer)
We passed by Bubba Gump and stopped for a Forest Gump "life's a box of chocolates" photo. Ended up eating there, it looked good
and Kym fancied a fish burger. Our table overlooked the ocean and you could even see the tropical fish swimming. Such a cool resturant with lots of Forest Gump references. Even how you get the waiters attention is a set of 2 Forest Signs: "Run Forest Run" or "Stop Forest Stop". Drinks that are ordered come in a take home glass.. Kym got a cocktail shaker Margarita with a Coronita in it and I went for a slushies with a light up projector cup ?
The Manta Ray Night Snorkel started as a sunset boat cruise aboard a huge tinney. The wind was warm and across the horizon where the sun was setting there was a lot of haze causing the sun to look completely red. It was stunning.
We were fitted with snorkeling gear and jumping into the warm water we swam to a board where you hold on lying flat in the water and watched through our masks at the ocean floor below. The blue LED lights attached to the board attracted the tiny plankton which attracted the Manta Rays. The majestic gentle giants swam next us, so close that they touched us a few times,
it was such a spectacular and graceful display. We were lucky enough to have 4 Manta Rays (one was called Gamma- Gamma Ray ?). One of them would have been 8 ft from wing to wing. AMAZING!! We watched them for around 45 minutes. For anyone traveling to the Big Island do this, highly recommend!!
On the boat ride back the moon was full, the breeze warm and both of us were buzzing on such a high from this experience.
Just as a side note, the travel agent recommended we did this but if we had booked through her it was over double the price. Shop around friends and check Groupon too. As another side note if you find something on Groupon call/email them first and see if they will match the Groupon price. Groupon take half so businesses are happy most of the time to price match .
