A Dose of Outside
A Dose of Outside is intended to share a bit of nature with you as experienced on my local hikes and other adventures. Take a moment to look out the window or step outside and see what it is you see. What you smell. Notice what’s growing around you. Use all your senses and really get A Dose of Outside!
HIKE DATE: 8/21/13 Sonoma Valley Reservoir I’m home from work and have just under an hour and a half before my next commitment. So I grab my boots, hat, camera and small water bottle then make tracks. This is hiking light for me! No backpack or poles, but seemingly unavoidably, I still have stuff dangling off my hips. It’s hot and the lake is algae filled around the edges. The sunlight is highlighting the layers under the water, giving it depth and meaning. Making something mucky look beautiful and exotic. I hear some movement behind me and it’s too young boys jogging. Up – here comes someone else. Looking around the reservoir on paths that are visible, I see quite a few people. Hmm. . . It’s about 4:30 and the light is hitting everything just right. The color splattered leaves are shining as if on fire! The Spanish moss is backlit and blowing in the breeze. Ahhh. . . . More people and dogs and horses. What is going on today? There’s a little family of ducks hanging out near the shore, but they start to paddle away when they hear my footsteps. I’m up the hill and not close at all, but still they head towards the center of the reservoir. The water around them is so bright it looks like a flashlight in a mirror.
I’m mesmerized by all the colors. Rounding the bend I see a woman and her two dogs. The dogs are slowly making their way into the plant filled shallows. Boy do they look happy! It's hot and they have a lot of fur. They’re some kind of wolf mix I think, beautiful animals. It’s a short walk, but I feel refreshed and got my Dose of Outside! I hope everyone had an opportunity to at least step outside, see the sun, or clouds, take a deep breath and notice what you smell and what is growing around you. On a local side note: The Annex-Wine Bar on Sonoma Hwy has a community dinner every Wednesday night for $5.00. It’s quite a lovely setting and the food is fantastic. The meals are prepared at the Community Café right next door, and much of the produce is donated from local
farms and friends. Tonight much of what was served came from the Green String Farm.
