We arrived in San Francisco late that evening, and got a cab to our hotel just off Union Square. After the relaxing, quiet atmosphere of Maui, it was nice to be in a bustling city again. They were all facing a wall so prisoners became very lonely. The solitary confinement cells are down at the end of the block.

It would be pitch black in there when the door was closed. Guards would open the door every now and then and blast the prisoners with fire hoses.

The prisoners chipped away at the grate at the back of their cells. When it was big enough they could crawl into the gap between the cells and plan their escape.

You can see the board at the back with the knife shapes painted on. This was so the chefs could tell straight away if any knives were missing.
