Today is Thanksgiving which is a strange holiday celebrating, as far as I can gather, the stealing of a continent from its native inhabitants. However, it is a very precious holiday for most Americans and signifies all that they have to be grateful for which is a lovely sentiment in anyone's book. It is a time for families to be together and enjoy each others company, a time for eating lots of great food and just being together. Although it is not a holiday I am familiar with, nor have I ever celebrated, I miss my family today and I miss Ben.
I have had a fantastic few days in San Francisco and tomorrow comes my time to move on. It hasn't been so awe inspiring as vegas or as much of a neck ache as New York. It hasn't been as emersive as DC but it has been calm, relaxed and has ticked off a few of my bucket list entries.
On Tuesday I walked through Union Square and down to Market Street and then caught a tram to Pier 39 which is very touristy but in a quaint sideside town sort
of way. I jumped on a ferry over to Sausalito, which is a 25 minute boat ride and a world away from anywhere I've been so far. It's off season so the place was cool and sparse with people. It was a welcome breath of fresh air from all the people that have surrounded me on my trip so far. I had a stroll up the promenade and took in the sea air. The sun was setting behins the Golden Gate Bridge on the ride home.
I went back to Honey Honey for dinner that night and read a book.
On Wednesday I grabbed the 10.30am ferry to Alcatraz! A really touristy thing to do but you can't come to San Francisco and not visit Alcatraz. It was fascinating. Even off season it was full of people but when donning the earphones for the Cellhouse audio tour you could almost be competely alone. The place was bleak enough without the sound effects but when listening to the stories of past inmates and guards, it began to feel icy cold.
I walked up through Fishermans Wharf, passed elaborately adorned candy stores, street performers and dozens of souvenier shops
all selling the same thing. I kept walking around the coast road to Fort Mason and hopped on the no. 28 bus to the Golden Gate Bridge. It was overcast but I managed to get one or two good photos of the magnificent structure before the sun went down.
I got some groceries on the way back to hostel and carried them in theior brown paper bag like they do in the movies. Until my arms started to ache then I carried them like a normal person, by the handle.
Today I am having a day off. I'll pop out leter to see if I can cat a cable car then head back here as the hostel are putting something on for Thanksgiving. We'll see what happens.
