Heading out once again, for a long travel day, we packed up the camp, and took to the road. Today, we head for Los Angeles as we start to sadly wind down the trip. Driving was, for the most part, uneventful, until the fateful moment, while looking for a place to shower, I pulled off on the side of the road for a look at the directions. Knocking the top off the water jug I instructed Alex to jump out and go to the back seat to locate it. The second he exited the car I heard a moan and yell and looked back to see him standing on the side of the road not moving. It soon became apparent he had stepped bare foot right into a patch of sand spurs. Once back in the car, he spent the next 10 minutes removing what seemed like hundreds of spurs. While it appeared painful, I could not help but laugh hysterically at this comical event.
Pushing onward, we located a truck stop where we were able to get a nice hot shower and get the 2 days of camping washed off. Later in the afternoon, we planned to meet
my step brother, Scott #SyeWilliams at his apartment in downtown LA. Once there, we set our bags in, then off for a Tour of LA, as only Scott can give. A fixie supplied to Alex, a skateboard for Scott, and a really cool rented Metro bike for me, complete with a bell and headlight. Off we went racing through the streets of LA. Scott in the lead, riding that board in and out of traffic faster than we could pedal, we were taken to Little Tokyo, zipped in and out of the streets of China Town, walked the bikes around the Staple's Center, home of the Lakers, road around Walt Disney Hall, and admired LA City Hall. We saw the places he has lived and heard some stories that were quite interesting to say the least. Topping the tour off before heading for dinner, we went in a set formation, Alex in the middle, through skid row. Now, if you ever thought Tampa Bay had any sort of a homeless problem, you obviously have not been to a city like this. Block after block of this area was lined with tents and tarps providing some sort of shelter for the
hundreds, maybe thousands of homeless in this city. It was a sad and interesting part of life in this area to see. Moving on, we rolled up on a gathering of car enthusiasts who had a sort of impromptu car show off one of the side streets under a bridge. Riding through, I hear someone in the crowd say, check it out, he brought his Metro bike. Jokingly, Scott said lets get out of here before you get beat up. Stopping at a Korean BBQ, we sat and had a very interesting meal that should have come with directions. Unbeknownst to us, we had to cook our own food over this grill like contraption in the middle of the table. Topping this experience off was the comical birthday ritual this place has. A guy was placed in the middle of the room in a chair, while a very serious looking Korean guy proceeded to spray bottles of Champagne all over this guy from all directions. He was totally soaked by the time the stone faced assailant was done. Full and feeling like this meal may return to haunt us later, we road back to the apartment and called it a
night.
