Driving to Phoenix

Today is my birthday, and I have driven from San Diego to Phoenix. Big drive, hot day and we are staying in a rather spartan van park on the north side of the city.

We stopped for lunch at El Centro, in southern California just north of the I8. Dusty and hot, but it was nice to get off the road. Elaine tried driving today, but it was a bit of a disaster and neither of us were very comfortable.

Getting to the van park was a marathon. We got onto the I17 about 5.00 pm, still peak hour. But it looked like a short run up that and then the park was less than a kilometre from one of the exits. Which would have been okay except that just a bit north of where we entered the I17, it was under repair, and we were shunted off onto a series of side roads. We were getting used to this, and were all ready to take our exit road, when that too was blocked. We ended up going north to the next exit, and then coming back down what felt like some pretty dodgy

roads at the time.

Why is it still so hot?

At 9.00pm its still 39 deg C. It was 44 deg C today, but the van air conditioner took care of that. Now we are sweltering, and it is not very pleasant. Will be glad to get going tomorrow.
