Blog 10-22-17 The Grand Canyon
We worked hard at staying warm this morning with the electric and the propane heaters running, the temperature was 27 degrees outside and 50 inside. There was no anticipating this cold snap, it had been 78 in Flagstaff yesterday, who would think we would have such a change in the weather. There were too many artificial lights to see any meteors besides I couldn't stay out long anyway.
The sun did warm the air up quickly and by 9 am it was 50 degrees. Watson was bright eyed this morning and wanted to go for his walk but it had to be a slow, short walk because he needs to rest his leg. He did limp on it this morning and the pain pills make him sleepy so he can get lots of rest. He has to be in his crate when we are not home so there is no jumping and confined to the fenced in yard when we are home. Linus and Alfy seem to know something is wrong, they haven't tried to play with him in the last day or so.
We had to move the motorhome forward about 6
ft because the sewer hose wouldn't reach so that meant moving the fence, pulling in the slides and repositioning everything inside. But it was accomplished in a short time and after the big boys were done walking we had lunch then headed out to see the canyon.
It was a picture perfect day with dark blue sky, no wind and delightful temps of low 70 s. We went to the visitors center and got our books stamped and got the lay of the land. We found the rim, not an easy task, and just stood and marveled at the sight. It didn't look real, like we were looking at a huge painting. It was very people intensive but there was still room at the rail to get the view you wanted. We walked around and looked and photographed from this angle to that angle then decided to pick up the free shuttle busses and go to Bright Angel Lodge and see the trail to the bottom. Ginnie had been here in the 70 s and rode a mule to the bottom so she wanted to see that section of the park.
Before long there we were at familiar
sights for both of us. We hit the gift shop then had an ice cream cone while sitting on the wall looking at the canyon. There were people well below walking on the trail and we even saw some desert mountain sheep. While getting ice cream we talked to the fellow in front of us and he had just hiked the canyon with his girlfriend going down yesterday and coming up today, and he could still walk! Oh youth. He asked if we had hiked it and I could say yes I did, going half way down and coming up the same day. Ginnie said that she rode a mule to the bottom, bet he was surprised by our answers. We didn't tell him how many years ago that was.
It was time to head back home so we found the bus station and hopped on the blue line which took us back to the visitors center. We saw several elk while on the bus, a train passed in front of us and we got to see lots more of the park.
After getting home and feeding the dogs we found a sun spot out in front of
the camper for our happy hour which didn't last long. As soon as the sun goes down it starts to get cold again so we put the boys in the camper and went out to dinner to a restaurant right next door. Very good Italian.
Now we are snuggie warm reading and writing the blog. We are going back to the canyon tomorrow to see some parts we missed.
