A great example of a fault visible on the mountain at Glacier NP
Monday, July 9, 2007 We woke up to the sound of rain on the roof. Juneau is in the middle of the rain forest. It rains here 222 days out of the year! We decided that we would check things out. First thing was to stock up on groceries. I still haven’t gotten used to the cost of food up here.
Then we headed downtown. Juneau is the capital of Alaska; population 31,000. It’s a little town with only 50 miles of roads. Downtown is on a harbor and quaint with narrow street. The shops that cater to tourists. There are usually 5 cruise ships in town every day.
One of the main attractions is the Mendenhall Glacier, a glacier that’s visible from the road. The ice is retreating fast, about 200 ft. in 10 years so we wanted to be sure to see it. We went to the visitor’s center in the afternoon; ended up going on a Ranger led hike that described some of the geology and plants of the area, which Frank loved. When we go to a new area Frank likes to study the geology, birds and plants and then try to find examples during our stay. Sometimes I get to read geology books aloud to him as we drive along and he tries to spot mountains or rocks. Sometimes it’s a bit weird, but it does make things interesting
It rained all day, but we were prepared with our gore tex coats and pants and it didn’t bother us. The visitor center was very crowded (all the cruise ship passengers) so we decided to come back Tuesday to do some hiking.
We went back to our campsite and hunkered down in CT for the rest of the rainy nig
