Coon Dog Cemetery
Only for Coon Dogs It just keeps getting better....it has only been one week (seems like a month) since we arrived in Red Bay, Alabama and we have already seen and done it all! The festivities have been overwhelming. Yesterday, we went to the famous Coon Dog Cemetery. I know all of you have been anxious for this visit and report. I think we had to drive about 15-20 miles to get there as the road narrowed and twisted around like a snake. It was definitely one of those roads you wanted to "walk faster because you could hear the banjo's". It was not the most convenient place for the masters to visit their dogs graves. Hope you can see that Lulu went with us. The coon dog cemetery began in 1937. ONLY coon dogs can be buried here. One local said a lady wanted her poodle buried there and sued the place but lost -- only coon dogs and they mean it. There were certainly a variety of graves and markers. Easy Going Sam had his collar on the cross, one had a miniature dog on the stone, CooperHead Boy had his picture on his marker but the one I thought said Find Lulu & Cory
Lulu in top photo, Cory below it all was
"Lucky" who had his name on the bottom of his feed dish on his grave...simple but meaningful. There was even an outhouse for any Lady visiting the cemetery -- why no Men's outhouse??? After leaving the cemetery, we went to a flea market in Muscle Shoals, AL. It was okay...not great. From there, we went to Florence, AL. - the birthplace of Helen Keller. Can it get any better? YES IT CAN.....read my next blog and what we visited. It was terrific!!!
