This may be short -- using I phone -- Tarjei's computer is either comatose or dead -- we will find out in San Miguel.

We crossed the border at Nogales on Jan 19 accompanied by a very nice couple from Kewlona, who had two big husky cross dogs with them. There were no problems -- just lots of paper work and a mini car search ("Do you have fruit? Guns? Ten thousand dollars?"). Then we headed south. We were trying to make good time so we just stopped at a supermarket to buy some food for lunch. Tarjei was quite enthusiastic about a coconut milk drink that he found ("something local") -- but later on I noticed it was actually coconut milk Pedialyte (a pharmaceutical product for rehydration of sick kids). So we'll keep it for later in case of need.

Anyway, we stayed that night at San Carlos, a small village on the beach at the Sea of Cortez. The location was beautiful. The little hotel accepted dogs (and there was a welcoming committee of small yappy mutts) The hotel itself was interesting -- Tarjei called it "Zero Star" but I think he was being cynical. There was a bed (narrow and lumpy), a bathroom (and really, in Mexico, hot water is an unnecessary luxury), and the insect life was fascinating and harmless. We slept like logs -- no bites in the morning and a chilly invigorating shower to start the next day.

We have now been driving in Mexico for three days. We've mostly been sticking to toll roads because we are trying to reach San Miguel tomorrow. The toll highways are beautiful roads with little traffic and wonderful views, but very expensive -- more than $100 on tolls so far. Everything else --Hotels, food, are quite cheap.

Tonight we are in Guadalajara. Tomorrow, San Miguel.

Sounds like a great time. Your pictures look like it may be a bit warmer than here. We got in the car this am at minus 21 . With wind chill it was below minus 30. Just a bit of envy.... Have fun. K & C
