Que tal! Had a shortish bus trip from Playa to Valladolid. Been very impressed with the bus service here. I had read that in Valladolid very few people spoke English so was excited to practice our spanish which I think we are both doing quite well...along with hand gestures. Valladolid is a cute colonial type town and our hostel was next to a nice square and church. In the middle of Valladolid is a square full of trees where allthe local families hang out instead sitting at home in front of a tv like we all do. The buildings are all painted diffrrent colours.
From Valladolid we did a day trip out to Chichen Itza and Il-Kil, a sink hole you can swim in. We got to Chichen Itza early to beat the crowds and the heat. The ruins are pretty impressive and we spent hours walking round the grounds. We were way more prepared than the Tulum ruins so we had actually eaten breakfast and brought snacks and water. The observatory and the ball court were pretty cool and we learnt lots standing next to english speaking guides. Their favourite trick is to get you to stand in particular
spots and clap so you can hear it echo back. We were both dripping with sweat so jumped in a collectivo and headed to the cenote for a swim.
We got to Il-Kil, changed into our togs, had a shower and jumped in with the hundred other people there. Its a pretty popular tourist stop. The water was really refreshing and full of little fish. The scenery was nice with vines coming down from the roof. We swam until we were tired then walked around the grounds which is actually a hotel. Daz went back in when most of the tour groups had left then it was time to hitch hike back to Valladolid. It feels like hitch hiking standing on the side of the road waiting for a collectivo to come by to pick you up.
That night I was sitting on our hostel balcony with anothrr aussie couple when it sounded like Valladolid was under attack. There was loud bangs like car bombs going off. It wasnt until the last bang that we realised it was fire works. Daz and I headed out to the square in hope of seeing more but it was over. Turned
out there was a weddi g at the church and the bride and groom headed off in a horse and carriage.
Next morning it was warm early so we went to the Zaci cenote which is close to the middle of town. When we got thete it was like having our own private paradise. Once again we swam around for ages in the cool water until more people started coming in. Was pretty impressed with Valladolid and we discovered our new favourite beer, superior, and the delights of cheap meat rolls of the street cart called tortes, kinda like a hot pork roll back home, yummo! Bussing it to Merida now so adios.
