Red house in white city
Calle 33-B in Colon Garcia Generes neighborhood, near Plaza de Toros. The "white city" of Merida has a red house, and we're staying here. It's a beautifully restored stone building, with many artistic flourishes added by the guys who rehab'd it: Douglas and Kerry. We're staying in the casita in back, near the swimming pool. The pool is surrounded by lush greenery, including many trees: coconut palm, orange, banana, plantain, even a mango tree over the neighbor's stone wall. This will be home base for the next three weeks.
We've come to a gentle, shy-but-friendly city. Merida is busy, even on weekends. It's a city of about 750,000. Traffic is dense; exhaust is pervasive, especially in centro. Public transport has buses everywhere. But we have a basic rental car so we can make some excursions to out-of-the-way places in the region, once the rest of our luggage arrives. (Delta never forwarded our checked bags past Atlanta, and it's now three days on with no clue as to whereabouts.) We're glad we both packed clothes in our carry-on bags!
Most visitors to the Yucatan peninsula stay in Cancun, which is Disney at the beach. Merida is where the region really resides. Reality transcends fantasy.
