Lazys Days
Rums in a hammock on Zicatella Beach We took the night bus to Palenque to see some amazing ruins - the previous ones had been Zapotec or Aztec, these were the start of the Mayan ruins. These are set in the jungle with really loud howler monkeys in the background. We are not much for Museums but they have a particularly good one with a recreation of the tomb of Radiant Shield K'inich Janaab Pakal. Why doesn't anyone have fantastic names like this anymore! You can't go into the real one anymore because of humidity damage to the ruins. On the same day, we were also taken to a place called the Agua azul - translation being blue water. Its supposed to be these amazing water falls with turquoise blue water. Not so much when we were there as you can see from the picture we uploaded - Carol in front of the very muddy and brown water after the rains. It was a good day all the same.
The budding Archeologists Garry & Carol then ventured on to a further set of ruins. Chichen Itza, a very dramatic and very old set of ruins, a combination of Mayan and sacrifcial loving Toltecs. The Massive "El Castillo"
is situated in the middle of the site and is basically a gigantic Mayan Calender. We spent the day avoiding "indefatiguable hawkers" (we got this phrase from Lonely planet & found out just what this meant during this particular day) We ended up being there a day before an Equinox. Masses of people come here during this time to see the shadows created by the sun of a moving serpent along El Castillo. We were lucky enough to get a glimpse of this, but it also meant there were lots of hippies meditating looking for spiritual energy, or something like that.
Just in case we haven't seen enough ruins yet, we decided to check out some more at Tulum. The ruins weren't as impressive as some of the others we have been to, but the location was outstanding. It's set on the most amazing beach on the Carribean coast. Unlike the other ruins, we were able to take a break from walking around in the hot sun to take a dip in the beautiful clear blue sea. (that may even be a song)
So tomorrow we head for Belize which we hope will be a very chilled few
days on an island in the Carribean sea. It's nice to be able to use the word Carribean in so many sentences!

Sweet action. Cool that you went to so many places we went, it brings back memories. No doubt Drouyn gave you some tips? If you go to Cancun, head out to the Island of Women (Isla Mujeres) for a few nights if you have some time. Way better than Cancun.
