Seagrass Conch
Conch in Seagrass After another rainy night & wet clothes on the clothesline... some things may never dry, oh well. Awoken by the roosters & dogs & babies next door. Love it! We had breakfast at Lucy's this morning, which was recommended by Peter. Lucy's is just that, her house, her kitchen, her kitchen table & a small handwritten sign on the wall with what is available to order. We sat at her table & ordered from her brother, who was covering for her for the day so she could go to church with her daughter, Sophia. Sophia was at the table finishing her breafast sandwich. Our breakfast was fantastic of course. Scrambled eggs with ham & empanadas (just made by Lucy's brother) of chicken. Yummm!! After our $8 breakfast we strolled through town, said hello to the dogs & roosters we recognized & went back to our palapa to read & rest our full bellies.
While reading we heard the voices of a couple of our boat mates from yesterday, Joe & Kathy from Eugene Oregon. We went out to say hi & exchange emails & were invited to go with them in their rented car to a great snorkel beach. So,
Beach
At Punta Allen as we had no plans, we said sure. It was worth it. The beach was north on the main road toward Tulum & took us about 25 minutes to drive 2km. The road sucks! But well worth it. There were a couple houses along the way but mostly just deserted beach. Beautiful beach!! We snorkeled for awhile (the waves were Huge & we worked our butts off to get out there but it was fun), walked on the beach & found another beach in a cove that we had to go to. So we made sandwiches (thanks to joe, kathy & tina from holland) of avocado, tomato & cheese. After our sustenance we headed up the beach, shell hunted & the guys went back to retrieve our snorkel gear since we heard from another couple that they saw a ton of fish. So, we ladies waited on the beach & talked with a local family out enjoying the day. The grandma brought us over a plate of shrimp ceviche & chips to keep us busy. I love these people! It was the best ceviche I've ever had.
The reef is about 200 yards off the shore & it's super
Conch
Shells everywhere! shallow & seagrass filled all the way to the reef. It's only about knee to waist deep anywhere. It's really weird. Then you get to the reef & it drops off & is filled with fish. We saw schools of hundreds of sargeant majors, silver fish (don't know the name), we saw several lionfish, huge trigger fish, a huge grouper fish, just a lot of fish. It was kinda cold & windy & a tad rainy but worth it for sure.
We went home & made some dinner in our neighbors house again & read books & ate the last of our homemade cookies (thanks Jacobs!) & walked on the beach for awhile. The locals were having a dance & everyone was dressed up & the music was loud. It was really sweet just to see! It was a fun last night for sure.
