How is the serenity?
This sort of beach is everywhere here and even after 2 weeks we are really not sick of it... Buenos dias amigos y amigas....
We are feeling pretty lucky at the moment and wondering what good deeds we did in former lives to deserve such a nice long stay in paradise. We are still on the Mexican Caribbean coast and really, why would we go anywhere else? The beaches are breathtaking, the people are so friendly you would think we were all related (actually we are so tanned that I would not be surprised if they did mistake us for their long lost cousins Consuela and Carlos...), the food is delicioso and muy cheap, there is always a 2 for 1 happy hour somewhere, and you can drink beer walking down the street. What is not to like? Oh and as my pervy husband will no doubt tell in great detail, the eye candy is plentiful and pretty.
We are at Playa del Carmen today. We spent 5 days here after Cancun, and I have to say it leaves Cancun for dead and it really is just lovely. As well as the beautiful beaches, there are sweet little alleys and streets full of bars and shops. Everyone is in a good mood (maybe because they are all drinking
Bill at some ruins
People drink anywhere here, and well, we dont want to offend by not joining in. at all times of day. It is actually cool to see that most of the people downing a beer at 930am are over 50 - not the young larrikins one might expect) and there is plenty to see and do.
The night we arrived we went out for a few drinks and Bill was ever so excited to meet some "really nice Americans". I left him under this mistaken impression for a while before enlightening him that nice Americans are usually actually Canadian. We had a great night out drinking with them, though I am not sure Bill remembers much. He went and played a round of golf at some schmancy resort with them a few days later and came home amazed at the number of iguanas running around the course.
We spent a day at Xcaret, a big wildlife/adventure park which was great fun. We swam in an underground river (all rivers here are underground for reasons I dont yet fully understand) and snorkelled for the first time in a lagoon full of electric blue coloured fish. We are now hooked on snorkelling. That night we saw a show of traditional dances and singing which was pretty
Crazy Pole Dance
This is a traditional dance to worship the sun. A holy person sings from the top of a very tall pole and spins the top thingy around while four guys through themselves off backwards. cool.
We then popped over to Isla Cozumel, the only Caribbean island in Mexico, for 4 days. Cozumel is another little piece of paradise. Same white sand beaches and same turquoise coloured water that really does take my breath away every time I see it. We somehow managed to get an amazingly cheap price to stay at this great resort. So spend the whole time lounging, swimming, drinking, walking and more snorkelling. This time the snorkelling was in the open ocean, though as the resort is built into a bit of a cliff, you can just step off the side of to get into the very warm water. The fish were amazing and even with my at times debilitating shark phobia (I have been known to have a panic attack in a swimming pool) I really loved it. Well I loved it until a weird looking grey fish started stalking me and I had to get out. I wish I hadnt as a while later some dolphins were playing right where we had been.
We are now back in Playa for a couple of days while we ponder how to spend our last week here. I imagine there
Sunset on Isla Cozumel
Imagine how hard it was to sit on the beach, watching this sunset and drinking a cocktail.... will be some swimming, some drinking and some sunbathing. We are off to Chitchen Itza on Thurday and will also take a day trip down to Tulum where there are some more pretty ruins and more stretches of pristine sparkly beaches.
As I said, we are feeling pretty lucky with our lot, and often find ourselves wishing various people were here with us to share in the fun. Our thoughts are especially with Toni and Sammy, as they have been having a bit of a rough time, and also Miss Julie who was silly enough to fall down a small cliff. Take care guys.
Hope all is well for you all. Lots of love...
Nic
Hey all,
For a change I am not going to open with '..as Nic pointed out'. Instead I am just going to straight out say this is the Shizz Nizzle (is it still cool to say that or is Snoop no longer cool?).
Before I go on to say how much I am loving being away and relaxing and stuff I have to send my thoughts to Sam & Toni and their families. Really sorry to hear about Sam's
loses and I wish there was something we could do for you, Sammie. As insensitive as it sounds all we can really do is have a beer for you (there ain't a helluva lot to do other than drink, sunbathe and eat, oh and sleep). Oh and sorry to hear about Julie and her little biking accident.
So anyway on to the more pressing issues of our trip.
I loved Cancun and thought the place couldn't be beaten. I now think of it as the Auckland of the Riviera Maya. Its the first place you fly into and you think its all good and then you get out of the place and realise that everywhere else is so much nicer.
Playa Del Carmen is fantastic and, believe it or not, really does leave Cancun for dead. We're going back to Cancun, probably for a night or something, but for a reason. As I mentioned above, like Auckland, when you fly internationally you more often than not, have to leave from Auckland.
Why is Playa so good? I really don't know. It could be the fact that as soon as you wake up and go to grab a coffee at 9am we run into three or 4 middle aged people walking down the street with Coronas. To add to that, they may be drinking them becuase they are $1 each which is cheaper than getting a coffee. Poor spending tactics by me but I can't beer (thats a pun folks) the thought of not having a coffee first thing in the morning. It could also be the ridiculous amounts of beautiful women walking the streets with just their bikinis on, I ain't talking 4 or 5, I'm talking every woman (which ain't always that great). It could also be that everything is centralised and easy to get to. It could be that if you wanted to, you could walk the main street from 12 in the morning until 12 at night and every single one of those hours will be a happy hour and you'll get 2 for 1, if my maths is right that then makes the beer $0.50 each. As you can tell, unless you're a nun or a priest this place goes off!!!!!!!
And then on to Cozumel. Well this was paradise. The 5 star resort we somehow manged to fluke on Expedia was brilliant. We didn't really leave the place for four days as we didn't need to. It has been a very very relaxing last 4 nights on Cozumel. All we've done is lie in the sun and read whilst Nic has been drinking cocktails, which I found to be a little bit of a piss take. There ain't really much to say about Cozumel as it was just 4 nights of pure relaxation. Oh I am incredibly burnt now and am feeling in a little pain but hey thats what happens when you're on an island in the Carribean I suppose.
So as you can imagine I ain't hating it here much. Whilst I will be gutted to be leaving paradise its also quite nice to be able to say I'm off to Vegas next week and the week after that I'll be watching a Washington Wizards game. Shucks its a hard life at the moment.
I think I've said enough for now. Probably so much that that there may be a few people out there that are hating me.
Laters peeps
Billy
