Teotihuacan!Teotihuacan!
Teotihuacan!

We roughed a 45 min bus ride and pounded up an endless stream of stairs... and here we are: on the top of the 2nd biggest pyramid in Mexico!
It's been a while since we last blogged. I blame it on not being on the bike...
It seems we've been doing a lot of 'resting' these days, though we've definitely earned our padded bike shorts on the few days where we have been on our saddles. Since San Miguel we traveled through Guanajuato, Queretaro, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Hidalgo states to arrive at S'mac's in Huajuapan de Leon, Oaxaca. (S'mac is Sarah M, a hilarious energy filled friend of Nicholas' from his time in Fukui. Huajuapan is a town of 80,000 very religious people in Northern Oaxaca state). We took a side bus trip to Mexico City (we don't bike NORTH) and spent our first real days as a legitimate tourist in the big city. As always, pictures say it better than words, and so I'll end this blog post with a few borrowed words:
"Dream of that you are able to dream of; Go where you are able to go; Do what you are able to do; LIVE!"
(Efren Zenteno- a cyclist we met on the road who this year completed his quest to cycle across all 7 continents)
Wishing everyone the best for the holiday season!

Look honey! We're lost!Look honey! We're lost!

Nicholas trying to decipher the not-so-complicated roads of Queretaro
thanks to Daniela in Queretaro, and Ana in Mexico DF for being such awesome awesome people who made our cheeks hurt from laughing and our souls shine with inspiration...

And ofcourse to Sara, Angel and Israel in Huajuapan. We treated their home like it was our own: cooking, laundrying, spreading out all our stuff... And in return they drove us to one of the prettiest places we've seen on this trip, shared meals and stories, introduced us to their friends and were just all around happy wonderful people! (oh, and Sara also gave us her beautiful pictures that are now up on our blog!) We're now THAT much more ready to face the hills (we've seen previews) up ahead!

Grab-a-Wheel
Grab-a-Wheel is a 20,000 kilometer bike ride from Vancouver to Buenos Aires focusing on lifestyle choices and how they affect the environment. "Grab a Wheel" is used by cyclists when one cyclist offers to help another by cycling in front thus cutting down on the wind resistance the rear cyclist faces. What's so wonderful about the idea of 'grab a wheel" is that one cyclist is able to 'pull' another without expending any more energy than if they were traveling by themselves. Likewise, when people are in need of inspiration, motivation, desire to take steps towards sustainable lifestyles,... full info

We were celebreties for all of 5 minutes when a bus transporting a family from a wedding stopped at our impromptu campsite... A conversation with one aunt, turned into an autograph signing, picture taking frenzy!

The most exciting part of pinata bashing is dashing for the goodies afterwards! This sugar is going to get us up a LOT of hills!

Having camped for the most of our four months on the road, you'd think we'd have this camping thing down... But there we were, having driven 4 hours to a beautiful waterfall, trying to set up our tent... with our tent poles back at the apartment!

Only in Mexico city...Only in Mexico city...
Only in Mexico city...

Instead of celebrating the warmth and sunshine of December in Mexico, the chulangos (people from Mexico city) decided to instead make thousands of pounds of snow and ice, and transformed the centre Zocalo into a winter wonderland... We stood dumbfounded as people lined up for HOURS to skate on the outdoor skating rink, throw fake snowballs at each other and drive snowmobiles on a 5 m snow track...

Hujuapan hearts u
So happy to see that H-to-the-L made the blog! We had a blast hosting you. Hope the memories of crazy Catholics at 4:30 am, my crazy co-workers at 3:30 am, and crazy-long drives to waterfalls (and Camilla!) make you laugh from time to time on the long road ahead...or at least helped you get through the killer hills on the way to Oaxaca City. Sending lots of love to you both. Merry Ku-ri-su-ma-su!!

now I get it
We wondered what was going on in the DF zocalo but didn't venture to really find out. Glad you did... while I flee from the cold, Mexicans are creating a winter wonderland. How Ironic.
