Ronnie and I love the Olympics. Seeing so many countries compete in so many different sports...the pressure of it all! Sadly, we don't really get the Olympics here in English. Eleanor does and she was nice enough to invite us down to watch Phelps break many records and whenever we felt like watching it in the evenings, but in general, we can't really watch it in the casita...so we found our new favorite afternoon event...going to an expat bar to order tacos, burgers, fries, beer and tequila while watching the Olympics in Spanish on a big screen tv.
We discovered this bar one night while walking around with Dad the day after the Olympics had started. They had a window open and people were cheering at the big screen. Ronnie and I decided to check it out one day after school. When we made our first trip, we were the only ones in there (besides the bartender). Since it was only 3:30 in the afternoon, all we had was Mexico's coverage of the games. No back stories here! No special effects! Just the plain old sports cut for fast viewing and so one could see as much as possible. For
two hours we had the place to our selves while we proudly cheered on the US and Mexico. We have been back a couple times and are going to try to squeeze in one more visit.
Here is an interesting thing that happened today, Ronnie and I were cut in line...twice! First at MEGA (the grocery store) we were waiting at the meat counter to order some fresh cut bacon when another couple came right next to us and then when the lady behind the counter came to us, they interupted and ordered. Ni Modo. (No worries) We just brushed it off. But then later in the day, after I spent some time at the SPA volunteering (animal shelter) I stopped by the roast chicken place called Pollo Feliz to get some food for the day's comida. Wednesdays are their special day where if you buy a whole chicken, they give you a half one for free. (And the chicken is amazing by the way. Tastes almost like my grandma's marinade...AND they give you all kinds of sides to go with it) So Wednesdays are of course crowded. I was standing in the formed line and when I finally
made it to the window, the guy behind me jumped in front of me and cut! What gives? We were in line together for like 10 minutes so he knew I was ahead of him...and he didn't seem like he was in a hurry. It just surprised me that this happened twice today. For being "On Mexican Time," some people sure seem to be in a rush.
We have continued to have many rain/thunder/lightening storms here. We are having a huge one again right now with thunder shaking the house and the lights flickering. We have several candles lit...just in case. Byron is sitting in my lap now trembling. At least we got him out of the habit of barking every time thunder crashed. Now he only barks if Pinguica does or if he hears one of the many pups outside whinning. He is our little defender of justice.
Ronnie and I are
really looking forward to this Friday. It is our three year anniversary. Three Years! So to celebrate, we have been saving up and cooking a lot at home so we could afford a splurge...we are spending the day at the spa. (No, not the animal
shelter...a human spa) The longest treatment I have ever gotten is a facial and massage back to back for a total of two hours.
This treatment is going to last 6 hours followed by a romantic dinner on a rooftop overlooking San Miguel de Allende. I don't think we could ask for much more. We feel so lucky and blessed to be able to celebrate this important date in such a romantic and magical place.
(I have been asked to show more pictures of Byron so here they are! Enjoy!!)
Best BuddiesByron has become quite a lap dog during all the storms
