It is now day three and even though the thunder and lightening storms continue, we are giddy with our new life. Yesterday morning I met our first neighbor, though I have forgotten his name. I used my broken spanish to discover he worked on the casita that we live in and that he has visited Houston and San Antonio, but never to California.
Then Eleanor (our land-lady and rad Senora) took us in a cab down to one of the major supermarkets to do some shopping. The store is called MEGA and it lived up to it's name. I was so excited to walk in and see many exotic frutas and venduras. (Fruits and Veggies) We bought many things in this section but mostly a lot of avocados and tiny limes that go well with tequila. Then to the panderia section (bakery)..they brought out freshly baked bovelas (rolls) and we used tongs and placed the ones we wanted on a metal pizza tray. We also picked up a cinnamon twisty bread. Next was tequila. We bought the kind that Senora Eleanor shared with us the previous day. We were hungry while shopping so we stopped by the deli and shared
a fresh and hot chili rellano that seeped cheese and grease down our fingers. We didn't care. It was fantastic. We also bought some chicken, hamburger, tostadas, 3 kinds of cheeses and two boxes of Kraft Mac and Cheese for those nights we need comfort food. Sra. Eleanor told us about this amazing shrimp cocktail that MEGA makes and is just wonderful. Ronnie brought this plastic bowl of red, watery sauce with shrimp in it and my fear brain thought "what the hell! That spells touristas!!" (bathroom troubles) But Sra. Eleanor assured us it was great with sliced avacados and safe. We bought all kinds of things then went through check out. The lady that bags your groceries doesn't get paid by the store at all, so you give her a few pesos depending on how much she bags. Eleanor explained to her in spanish that in the US, the store pays the baggers...she was shocked. We then took a taxi back up the hill to unload our groceries. Having our place stocked with snacks and food made it feel even more like home.
We then headed in a taxi down to El Centro with Sra. Eleanor for the
Camerones con Avocado
Close up of our first dinner 3 Cs we needed...Comida, Candles and Coffee. We shopped around all sorts of tiny shops around the Jardin. I bought several tall candles for under $5.00 total. We then went for comida at a restaurant called CasaBlanca. Ronnie and I both had the especial de la dia. It included tortilla soup with big chunks of avocado and white cheese in a spicy broth. Then our plate had arrachera steak, rice, beans, guacamole with chips and a cheese enchelada all for about $11.50. We added beer of course to make it be around $15.00. Everything was SO delisioso. We then went to a tiny coffee shop that was trough another store and bought two pounds of mexican coffee. Yum!
That evening, I read the local bilingual newspaper
Atencion while Ronnie read a book. We weren't hungry until about 9:00 (the correct time for a small dinner here) and so we had our shrimp cocktail over avocado with tequila, our fresh bovila bread and tortilla chips. It was divine!
This morning I cooked a small breakfast of one fried egg over beans and tortilla chips with spicy sauce. We have decided to stay home all day to relax and read.
Preparing Comida
The first one I have made! And Ronnie was amazing in that he drew, inked, toned and lettered a whole page for his comic!! Usually with all the stress and little time, it takes a week!
We decided to try and find the local tortilla maker, but got a bit lost and then the rain really came down! Our walk in the rain was really great. We got to learn our neighborhood even more. There is a great couple stores, a florist, a pet store and places to get food. We even have our own little town square and church. There is a market there on Saturdays that we are going to check out.
Since we didn't get any tortillas, I made a tostada with chicken, onions, avocado, tomato, lime, bell pepper, beans and cheese. We then took our daily siesta.
Tonight, the sky is flashing with lightening so I have lit some candles as our power goes out easily. Well, it is time for some tequila, salt, lime and a board game. Wish us luck ( Byron especially) in the storm!
