Neither of us are feeling great today. We are both suffering from a touch of heatstroke - we hadn’t realised just how hot it was yesterday and though we drank plenty we are still somewhat dehydrated and extremely sunburnt. Ian is looking a bit like a tomato whilst I am leaning more towards a beetroot! At least neither of us feel cold now. We stay in bed until 11am!
We decide we will go out for breakfast and both opt for hot cakes (thick pancakes) with maple syrup. Very naughty. There seems to be a bit of mis-communication at the cafe this morning. First our pancakes turn up with no cutlery - I’m sure they don’t expect us to eat them with our hands? Then my papaya juice turns up in, what looks like, a jam jar with a handle - it tastes nice anyway. Then...just as we are half way through, the waiter turns up with another plate of hot cakes and places them at the empty space beside us! Well it looks like he thought we ordered three portions so we eat them anyway. To be honest two hot cakes would have been enough...so now we are stuffed.
The bill appears and we have not been charged for the third portion so we have no idea what that was all about.
There’s nothing really left to see in town, but a stroll around is on the cards as we have little else to do. We wander up to have a chat with one of the amigos. He is suggesting that we might like a trip out to the hot springs. He recommends we get our own taxi and negotiate a waiting rate. The hot springs look fabulous and I would really love to go but it’s a steep 600m drop over 4km to reach it - we decide that it’s probably a step too far, especially with my morbid fear of heights. The online reviews state: ‘not for the faint hearted’ and ‘dangerous’ - I think that has decided it!
There is a lovely sunny seating area just outside our room so we settle down for a day of card playing. There is little else to do and we both feel in need of some R&R.
It’s late afternoon and we decide to go to the upper street in search of a coffee machine -
we are getting Oxxo self-service coffee withdrawal symptoms! We know there is a larger supermarket that the bus driver stopped at a few days ago and the only likely possibility. We walk the length of the street and cannot find it...weird? We walk back and realise that the shop, which was fully functional a few days ago, is now being hacked about by workmen! So that’s coffee off the agenda! We go for ice cream instead.
Back at the hotel, the train has arrived and the hotel appears to be pretty full. We have a conversation with the guy who has been allocated the room next door. He claims not to speak much English but it’s better than our Spanish! We are not sure if he is telling us that he is Spanish or Icelandic? Anyway, he is continuing on the train to Los Mochis tomorrow.
We try a different restaurant tonight. It pretty much looks like it might be the poshest in town. The food is really excellent - Italian with a Mexican twist. I have a kind of carbonara with a chicken breast that has been stuffed with spinach - it’s delicious. Ian chooses a tomato
based chicken dish which he also reports as being very tasty and full of fresh basil. This is all washed down with freshly squeezed lemonade - slightly sharp and very refreshing.
