It rose to prominence under Pakal, a club-footed king, he reigned from 615AD to 638 AD starting at the age of 12 years old! After him came his son Chan-Balum. The side is about 20 square km. Palenque was rediscovered in 1773 by father Ordonyez y Aquiar, a spanish priest. Pakal is represented by hieroglyphics of sun and shield. He died of old age and was burried in El Templo de los Inscipciones. All the ruins have been built without the aid of metal tools, pack animals or the wheel.
