In the last few days we have driven to and stayed in Montreal and Quebec and today have returned to Ottawa before we fly to Washington DC tomorrow.
We stayed in the old part of Montreal and it has great charm - the highlight for me was a visit to the botanical gardens where there was this amazing display of landscape sculptures - see photos to believe me- . I was also impressed with the Montreal metro rail system which we used to get around- very easy to use and quick- $8 for a day pass. French was the dominant language used but there was a lot of English so we got around ok.
In Quebec we stayed near the old town or Quebec Vieux as they say - no English is used or included at public facilities or road signs - a bit more challenging but we got by. Quebec City is the capital of the province of Quebec and it has a long history in french culture- it was first established in 1608 so it has been a round a while - the original stone walls of the fort are still in place in a section of
Montreal gardens
A green polar bear the city- very interesting and worthwhile from a heritage perspective - the birthplace of french culture in the Americas.
We are off to Washington DC tomorrow for four days - I am very excited by this as I will be there at the time they celebrate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther's speech and march on Washington in 1963- "I have a dream.." - what a speech , it will be interesting to see how it is celebrated- President Obama and two other ex presidents will be at a formal ceremony on Wednesday 28 August - I will try to be in the crowd and get some photos. Talk to you again soon.
