Niagara Falls
The Canadian falls with a Maid of the Mist boat. Rachel and I got back from a two day visit to Niagara Falls and Niagara-On-The-Lake last night so thought we would update you with how we got on!
Niagara Falls...
On Tuesday morning, bright and early, we hopped on a coach in Toronto which took us direct to Niagara Falls. The coach wasn't too bad and I passed the two hours by comandeering Rachel's Nintendo DS and playing CSI!
Once in Niagara, we dropped our bags off at our hotel (we couldn't check in properly it was too early) and made our way down to the falls. From up at the side of the river, they look smaller than we both thought but the noise and spray was incredible. It felt like it was drizzling a good 500m from the falls because of the mist caused by the spray. We took a nice walk along the side of the river until we reached the main horseshoe falls and the visitor centre.
We got a pass which included Niagara's Fury, Behind The Falls, White Water Walk and the Maid of The Mist.
Niagara's Fury was a short cartoon film about how the falls were created over millions
Us
A self taken photo with the Falls in the background of years and depsite being aimed at a fairly young audience, it was still informative and helped understand just what we were looking at and experiencing. Unfortunately Rachel and I seem to be being followed by a huge group of secondary school children (there was a group at the Hockey Hall of Fame too) who dont seem to have any manners or a volume control! We were then ushered into a theatre with a platform in the middle and a 360degree cinema screen which gave us a journey through the creation of the falls, complete with water, flashing lights, snow and wind. We were wet and cold when it finished but its all good fun!
Next we were taken down in an elevator to a series of tunnels which were behind the main horseshoe falls. They had a couple of look out points which didnt show much except that the Falls were very powerful and very wet and loud! One of the tunnels led us out to a lookout point right next to the bottom right hand side of the falls, it was here that we got the true scale of the power of the falls and realised that
Niagara's Fury
Lesson on how Niagara Falls were formed... and how to not look cool! they are a lot bigger than we thought! We were absolutely soaked but it was really impressive to see this up close, hard to describe just how much water there was!!
We took a nice stroll along the river to the docking station for the Maid of the Mist, a boat which takes people right into the the bottom of the falls. Again, this really brought home just how powerful the falls are. The noise and amount of mist created is huge and you almost feel at the mercy of nature. The boat ride only takes 20 minutes but depsite the waterproof "thing" we were given, we were absolutely drenched when we got off the boat!
We walked up to the hotel, relaxed in the hot tub (basically a bath with some jets!) and went out for dinner at a steakhouse overlooking the falls. The food was fantastic, the view amazing and after a walk round the casino we headed to the hotel, absolutely shattered!
