The third and final lighthouse today was Sandy Point. On the way out to Sandy Point, we noticed a boatyard with several lobster boats. They are so colorful and made for some great pictures.

We wanted to arrive at the lighthouse at low tide as the lighthouse sits on the east side entrance to Shelburne Harbor and, at low tide was to be accessible across a sand bar. Unfortunately, the tide was not low enough for us to walk all the way out to the tower, but we were still fairly close.

This lighthouse was originally built on a pier and is a caisson lighthouse, meaning it is built on a concrete or metal watertight retaining structure (caisson). These types of lighthouses were developed in the late 19th century as more efficient because they could better withstand harsh weather and were not as fragile. This type of lighthouse is also referred to as a sparkplug or bug light lighthouse. In 1990, the light was replaced and now is a fixed red light that is 47’ above the water level.

Last Lighthouse (bummer)
The panorama view is beautiful. Is that someone’s actually house, if so they have an awesome view! LOL that is funny! on Old Shep (1st pic), there is a guy on that boat looking at you :-) Question, so even tho the tide was low - is it safe to swim to the Sandy Point light house? How far up does the tide go on that light house, I see a water line; 6 feet? Where do all those boulders come from? Do they ship them in and drop them...curious. Love, love the pictures and my trip to Nova Scotia I'm not having. Can we trade places??? LOL

Sandy Point Lighthouse
That building is actually a community center. I'm sure you could swim out to the lighthouse, if you could stand the cold water. The tide probably isn't too much there.
