Canada Place
The Canada Place Convention Centre and cruise ship port What would we do today? Of course, how about motor foot again. Today we set off to the main business and shopping area of Vancouver set amongst 30+ storey buildings. We also needed to find a bank or ATM that took MasterCard as we had found that a couple did not. After looking around the huge underground Pacific Shopping Centre we visited the Roman Catholic Cathedral (gothic) and the much smaller Christ Church Cathedral. Both were virtually swallowed up by the surrounding skyscrapers which were nice but not impressive after the huge cathedrals of Europe that we’ve visited.
We then went back to Canada Place to go to “Fly Over Canada”. There were long queues so we had quite a wait. We’d heard it was good but didn’t know what to expect. Finally we got into the venue for a stand-up moving photoshoot of many Canadian scenes which I thought were more targeted at the young with groovy youngsters and loud music. We were then lined up again to be seated and strapped into seats on two levels. When we were asked to stow our bags and take off loose shoes I should have realised this wasn’t going to be
An image from Fly Over Canada
Fly Over Canada is a must see as long as you don't suffer from vertigo or are scared of heights. If sitting on the outside of a helicopter in mid air is your thing then you'll love it. a lovely sedate little fly over Canada. Our seat belts were locked so there was no way out, so “hold on folks, you’re off and away”. And we were! I was petrified and saw maybe only a couple of minutes of it by peeping out of one eye every now and then. I have to say that the scenery was spectacular but it felt like you were on the outside of a helicopter going really fast swooping down over boats, people, buildings, gullies, lakes and mountains. Every now and then it would fly out over a mountain and dive down the other side steeply. We went up into the clouds where we were sprayed with mist, also into the Niagara Falls where we also got a light spraying. The Aurora Borialis was spectacular as were the high mountains and autumn colours. Lindsay loved it. It was awesome. I came out with a looming tension headache and clenched hands from gripping the bars! It wasn’t a good place for person with height vertigo. What a sook!
We went out into the sunshine and back to the shoreline where we sat and had a Subway sandwich and iced tea looking out
Our apartment building
We were on the 2nd floor of a 36 floor building. over the harbour. Further along we found a wet area with fountains spraying up out of the concrete for kids to play in. They were having a ball. There were spouts of vertical and horizontal jets and sprays from the sides and the ground. What a wonderful play place for kids.
We wandered our way back to the apartment getting food for dinner then made our way back along the water front to a Pub for a craft beer and a long shot of people watching on and off the water. It was busy with yachts, motor boats, board riders, little ferries, runners, skate boarders, walkers and cyclists. A nice way to finish our date with Vancouver.
