Sup Y'all,
The long weekend is gone already... what happened! Dana and I had a very busy and very fun weekend in Vancouver. This city just keeps growing on me... every day and every adventure brings a new reason to enjoy Vancouver.
On Friday we got out of class early and we went to a beach in Kitsilano area as the weather was beautiful. The water was freezing cold, but Dana being a crazy one decided she would go for a "swim" anyway... she would run out into the water, dip herself in to about shoulder level, scream and then run out shivering to dry off. After a beer in a nearby pub, we went to meet with the school crew for some beers and a little concert at the UBC Grad Club called Koerner's Pub. The patio there is basically in a garden / forested area, and we enjoyed a nice cool Dead Frog Ale. The concert was just for the Math Biology people, and was a country music duo. The performers were a new couple, and were very much "in love". As Dana and I were the only couple in the audience, they had to relate all
of their love ideas on us... which Dana really enjoyed! It would have been embarrassing for me if only Dana wasn't so traumatized, so it became a very enjoyable experience for me! Even though the music was not our favorite, it was a fun time and they were entertaining to say the least... I will always remember the look on Dana's face when they asked us "Are you two in love? What is it like?" and "You must agree, two is better than one?"... priceless.
Saturday we met with my best buddy Lee and his parents for dinner in Steveston, which is a nice shoreside area near Richmond. Lee's parents were visiting him for the long weekend, and it was great to catch up with them. We pigged out on sea food and then walked around and had a tour of a heritage site where they repair old wooden ships in an old cannery / ship building place which was actually pretty cool (proof that we are getting old). Afterwards we went for a couple beers in Kitsilano, although we had some pretty terrible service from girls that would rather socialize than serve us beer (the nerve!). Fun day
in the sun.
On Sunday we went on a bike tour of the city lead by some UBC students who are in the course as well. The cost was covered by the school which was awesome. We started in Stanley park, cruised along the shore to Kitsilano, had lunch at Granville Island, then went up to GM place and that area, and finished by cruising some streets downtown. It was actually surprising that biking in the streets downtown was not scary at all. I would not feel the same way in Toronto that is for sure. Afterwards we went for a nice cool beer and watched Canada blow a 4-2 lead against Russia to lose the World Championships... the game was really good though. Dana has a hilarious sun burn (which until now she always told me she doesn't burn, only tans... haha!). She will have bra lines burnt in to her shoulders for the rest of the summer I think, very amusing.
Today we met up with my Uncle Brian and Aunt Rose. They took us on a nice walk around Granville Island which was really nice. It was raining out all day, and the cool weather
was actually a relief from all the sun we had before. Still though it was obviously necessary to cool down at some point in the afternoon with a refreshing pint! They took us for dinner at a great Italian place, where I had an amazing salmon dinner, and Dana had a delicious calzone of which I naturally had to finish! We ended the night by watching "Young at Heart", which is a great documentary film about a choir whose average age is around 80... very funny and sad too but definitely a keeper. We had a great time with Brian and Rose who Dana met for the first time and I hadn't seen in a few years. Rose did a great job of advertising Vancouver and UBC to us... who knows her pitch may work in the end, it is great here.
As you can see we had a very full and fun long weekend. We keep forgetting to bring our camera with us, but we did get a bunch of great shots from our bike trip which I think you will all enjoy. Hope everyone else had a wicked cool long weekend, and we hope to hear from
you all soon (and I will keep trying to update you guys with embarrassing stories about Dana).
Out Peace from Van
