Ice Hockey
The locals' idea of a fun Saturday evening out - mine too!Ski destinations don't really get more renowned than the expansive Canadian resorts, and Fernie had that 'criminally overlooked' feel about it, virtually as soon as you had reached the resort proper, and assessed the state of play, and the vast nature of the ski terrain. This time around, lodgings were in the shape of a catered chalet, with 2 friendly Australian chalet hosts, and an unreliable shuttle bus service which prompted us to rely more heavily on the legendary hospitality and accommodating nature of passing Canadian motorists with room in the back of the vehicle for you and your ski gear. Being a leisure skier and nothing more, I simply revelled in the option of gliding across luscious terrain where ski conditions were the best I had ever experienced, and the routes were clearly marked, until my foray into the forested 'off-piste' unknown resulted in me turning back once I had spotted what looked worryingly like bear footprints in fresh snow. Nightlife was low-key, but the downtown area of Fernie was not without its former-mining town sense of Canadian charm, and after all, the skiing was the main focus, and it also became apparent that a number of skiers (mostly Scandinavians,

Perfectly-groomed slopes, and barely another skier or boarder in sight! it seemed) had descended upon the resort for the entire season, and were lapping up the diversity of the terrrain, and the scope for ski heaven which the entire region provided. Since it also became apparent that Canadian portions at restaurants were not really far behind American sizes, I quickly dispensed with the idea of 3-course lunches, and was satisfied with the substantial nature of the whole deal. Ideally, each trip which one embarks upon achieves a major objective if it turns you onto a new-found interest which a person then latches onto, and takes on board due to its appealing nature. In the case of this trip, a trip to the local Ice Hockey Arena to see the Fernie Ghostriders battle it out with the visiting team from nearby Kimberly triggered off what has become a series of visits to a local Ice Arena to witness the local team take on their visitors, with memories present throughout of how this personal passion came to be. So, Fernie gets two thumbs up from myself for being an undiscovered gem, but then again, aren't these blogs all about spreading the good word, resulting in an increase in hotel prices due to

Mountainside retreat halfway up one of Fernie's numerous mountains a flurry of interest in specific areas....? Ooops, guess that's made my return visit to Fernie more of a bank-busting prospect!
