Tui the Knome
At Athabasca Falls, Jasper National Park Last time you tuned in I was off to a job interview in calgary. The interview went ok but I am not too confident on getting the job. Still We had a good trip to Calgary for the day. I didn't get to see much of downtown but it seemed nice and a little more corporate than edmonton. Temperature was a nice 26°C.
Tuesday was the Blackferns semifinal against France. This was the best game the Blackferns have played yet, and France gave them some strong opposition. They are in the Final against England on Sunday. The number of supporters has grown steadily since the first game, and I heard from home that me and Nico got some more TV time. Even on the 6 oclock news.
Before the game i had made a deal with Mel. She gave me a pair of her training shorts, so i looked the part, but i had to complete the after match training with the girls that didn't play. I figured how hard can that be. I saw them doing the training the other day and it looked like fun. But little did i know the trainer has a different program for
Me with a moose
The only moose i saw. the girls that day.
First we did 10 x 22m sprints. Managed that ok, lungs working hard, heart rate up a bit. Next it was 10 x 50m sprints with a 20sec break in between. I managed 8 of them. Then we got a 3min break before we started the 5 x 100m sprints. I went out hard in the first, struggled for the next 2, then lay down for an extended period of time before my lungs jumped right out of my chest. After the girls had done their 5 i walked back with them. One of the coaches (who is also the PE teacher at my old high school) said "what do you think your doing Bell, youve still got 2 more sprints to do" So off i went. It was quite a funny end to the day.
We had a 3 day trip planned through the Jasper and Banff National Park. Nico and Mel stayed behind as Mel is still recovering from her op, but 4 of us set off early Wednesday. We got to the jasper National Park early in the afternoon. First stop was the Miette Hot springs. The pool wasn't as flash
Lake Louise
Me and Tui at Lake Louise as debrets in Taupo, but the scenery was fairly amazing. Huge cliff faces on 3 sides and trees as far as the eye could see. We stayed the night in a homestay in Jasper. A retired couple ran it and told us what to see for our next days travels. I have found that local knowledge is invaluable.
Thursday we saw a couple of waterfalls, some lakes, a glacier, an elk and some deer. The park is so well organised. The roads are good and there are a lot of photo spots roadside; but nothing seemed out of place and nature seemed undisturbed. The highligt of the day was when we went to see one of the lakes. There was a 10min walk up a hill to get there, and when we got there we couldn't see anything because of clouds, but it was snowing. (at this stage its still a novelty). We had a snow fight, made a snowman, and enjoyed the snow. Tui the knome also travelled with us for the day. Altough i did forget him at one point, and left him with the snowman. Nothing a 20 minute backtrack wont fix tho. He's now safe
Mosquito Lake Hostel
Our second nights accomodation. No Power, phone, or running water, but they had good heat. and well, although is crate is now a bit chipped and hes missing a few toes, but thats from his other adventures.
That night instead of staying in Banff or lake louise which are the big centres we decided to stay at Mosquito Creek. Its not in too many travel brochures. Maybee the name puts people off? It was a hostel in the forest. No power, no phone, no running water or showers. But when you are looking for wildlife we figured this was the place to be. And on the plus side all of the cabins were heated well. We didn't see any wildlife, except from a squirrel, but the guy who ran the hostel told us where some bears were hanging around further south.
Next time on Matts Travel Blog, Will we see any bears? Will we make it out of the forest? How will the blackferns go in the final? Will i get a job or somewhere to live. Will Tui's toes grow back? Stay tuned.
