Well it’s been quite a while since I’ve written now hasn’t it.
I can’t say you’ve missed out on all that much though. Since our holiday to the states Jesse and I haven’t done too much traveling. But i’ve still attached a few photos of me doing crazy things, as i’ve always got time for that.
But we may as well start off with the bad news first. For those of you that haven’t heard we have had to postpone out trip home to New Zealand over Christmas (we were meant to be there now). The paperwork for my new visa didn’t come through in time so if I was to come home now, there’s no way I can get back into Canada. But I should have the visa in the first few months of next year. We are now looking at coming over in February.
So all this means I get a second white Christmas in Canada. We got snow in Edmonton about 4 weeks ago which is much later than we did last year. I’ve asked Santa for a GT Snowracer (It’s a sled that most kids got when they were about 12). Luckily for me
they make an adult sized sled, and im hoping to get some good use out of it in the weeks after Christmas.
I’m also moving to Calgary in the New Year. I am being posted in the sales office in Downtown Calgary for 3 months, so that should be quite the experience as i've never lived downtown in a big city.
I’ve just been thinking back to what we have been up to since our trip to the states. We went down to Calgary to visit friends at thanksgiving, where I broke my little finger trying to play American football. We also had deep fried turkey which was delicious but in no way good for you. (You put a whole turkey in a deep fryer for about an hour). During another trip to Calgary we visited the Calgary zoo which I was impressed with, and as you can see from the pictures I had a close run in with a Bear.
Halloween has come and gone again. Last year we went to an Oilers hockey game on Halloween so I figured why not carry on the tradition. This year I went as an 80’s glam rocker and
Jesse went as a hockey fan from the same period. I even had a tattoo drawn on my arm of a snake wrapped around a bloody dagger drawn in permenant marker. At least it wasnt as permenant as the name suggested though. As for the game, I still haven’t gotten in to Hockey as much as most locals yet, but im off to another game in Calgary so ill se if I get hooked then.
2 weeks ago I gave curling a go. Its kind of like lawn bowls except that it’s on ice. The first game I played didn’t go so well. I wasn’t quite sure about walking on ice. One shoe is meant to be “grippy” and the other “slippy”. So you push with the grippy one and slide on the slippy one. And you hold a broom to sweep the ice (Sweeping makes the rock go further). So anyway on only the second end my grippy foot become slippy and I fell down on my left knee. It wasn’t very graceful and my knee instantly swelled up like there was a golf ball under my skin. So I finished off the end before retreating upstairs with
Halloween
Waiting for the train to take us to the hockey game an ice pack in one hand and a beer in the other.
So a week passed and my knee was better, so I gave it another go. This time I had no falls and half the rocks I sent down the ice stayed in play. I tell you I had a grin from ear to ear when I finally got one to stay in play, as there’s nothing you can do to slow one down that’s going too fast. In the end we lost by a good margin, and I have decided to put my professional curling aspirations on hold for a while. Well at least until next season.
And last week I received an early Christmas present that I bought myself. I’ve now got a motorcycle sitting it the entrance way to our apartment waiting to come with me to Calgary. When I bought it the weather was still good, but of course it got delivered during the middle of a snowstorm. So I won’t be riding it till April next year. It’s a 2-stroke race bike like the one I had in NZ.
And that’s about it. I hope everyone back home has a great
Christmas and ill try to update this again in the New Year
Take Care
Matt
