We left Blighty on the 3rd March 2016 and we will arrive back in eight hours, on the 11th June 2016, which is a trip of exactly one hundred days.
The journey tracker on the blog has our final mileage as 33,711 miles. In doing so, we've crossed three continents, visited eleven countries, crossed the international date line and jumped over the equator twice.
It's hard to describe how it feels to be finishing the trip as thete is such a combination of emotions and thoughts: excited to be going back home, relived that everyone made it safe and well, keen to start afresh in the new home where we've only lived for six months; a small twinge of sadness that this particular adventure is finished; delight at the prospect of delicious home cooked food (especially in Ed's mind); looking forward to seeing family, friends and Stamp; and a deep sense of fulfilment that we were able to achieve our dream of travelling the world.
It's truly been the most amazing experience for us all. A brilliant tonic for our minds, excellent for family bonding and for understanding each other better and a great way for learning important lessons about some
of the key things that matter.
Naturally, as time goes by we won't remember it all as clearly as we do right now - that's why I did the blog in the first place. However, there are some memories that are already burnt deep and these will remain vivid for a very long time to come. A straw poll around the six of us shows that the highlights included:
- Dune buggying/sand boarding in Huachina, Peru.
- Floating islands of Uros, Lake Titicaca, Peru.
- White water rafting, Tongario River, Taurungi, New Zealand.
- Te Waihou Walkway to swim in the Blue Spring river, South Waikato, New Zealand.
- Prince Henry Cliff Walk and returning via the world's steepest railway, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia.
- Learning to surf and boogie board, Batu Karas, Indonesia.
- Jungle walk to swim in a waterfall pool, Yoygakarta, Indonesia.
- Night ascent of Mount Merapi volcano. Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
- Street art treasure find walk, Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia.
- Day tour of rural village life around Battambang, Cambodia.
- Hotel breakfast view of the Mekong river, Luang Prabang, Laos.
- White water rafting, upper Seti River, Pokhara, Nepal.
- Annapurna Teahouse Trek, Dhampus, Pokhara, Nepal.
- Jungle trek and jeep safari, Chitwan National Park, Nepal.
- Bathing with Elephants, Chitwan National Park, Nepal.
As I sign off from the blog for the last time, I'm reminded of the end scene from Jim Carey's The Truman Show, 'Good morning, and in case I don't see you, good afternoon, good evening and good night'
ENDS. KM. 1.30 am on 11th June 2016. Abu Dhabi Airport
P.S. Here are the before and after pictures of Ed and Hat leaving home and arriving back home. They showed great resilience as the return pictures were taken after 27 hours of travelling - way to go young globetrotters.
