I didn't write in my travel journal for a few days, as unfortunately I was sick, but I went back and filled in what I could.
Today we left the Safari "Otel" (most hotels here spell their names "Otel" rather than "Hotel") after breakfast and drove to the Lycian city of Phaselis. It was a beautiful drive along the Mediterranean (which was so exciting to see for the first time!). Phaselis is an amazing site in a beautiful area. The city was founded in the 7th C BCE, and flourished as a commercial trading centre until around the 11th C when other nearby ports superseded it. It is really a picture-postcard setting, built around three bays. There are many Roman ruins to see including the theatre and aqueduct. We enjoyed our time here very much.
We had lunch at a little place on the river, higher in the mountains. We had "trout in pan" which was really good, and they had removed most of the bones which made it much easier to eat than the trout I've had previously this trip. After lunch we drove a very twisty, windy road to Kas, with a stop for tea and WC
on the way. Kas is a beautiful seaside village (pronounced "Karsh"). Our hotel is Hotel Linda, where we'll spend two nights. We have a nice seaview, and a pretty good sized balcony. We got here about 5ish, and we quickly grabbed our laundry and walked to town (a couple of hilly blocks) with Chris and Grant to find a laudromat. We dropped our clothes off at Rose Laundry and went for a drink at one of the many little seaside places. We have discovered Efes Dark, which we like a lot.
We bought two Turkish towels for our boat cruise tomorrow (nice, cotton, hand loomed towels, thinner than usual towels so good for travelling). We picked up our laundry and raced back to the hotel to meet the group for dinner at 7:30. It turned out it was just Susan and I, Chris and Grant, Janette, and Nihat for dinner. We went to Smiley's, a 10 minute or so walk away. Both Susan and I had swordfish kebab for dinner, which was really excellent. We stopped for ice cream on the way back. On the way back I started to not feel very well, and I went right to
bed when we got back to our room. I was up vomiting during the night, and felt like crap in the morning. I knew I wouldn't be able to go on the boat cruise. I was disappointed but too sick to care too much. I made Susan go and she enjoyed herself very much and took lots of pictures so I could vicariously enjoy it later. I spent the entire day in bed and ate a little banana that evening but that was all I could manage all day. I went to bed very much hoping I would feel a lot better in the morning.
