Anyone use online photo storage while on long trips? Or have any suggestions for other methods?
I'm about to embark on another long trip and plan to take tons of pictures once again. I've upgraded to a 10mp dslr and plan to shoot in RAW and therefore will be using a ton of digital storage.
I was looking into online storage as a way to back up my pictures. Has anyone used any sites such as Mediamax? Any other suggestsions for backing up files while on the road and relying on the frequency of internet cafes?
Reply to this I have used flickr for years now and I think I'm going to switch over sto a storage device. They seem to be a better option since some of the places I go are remote and do not have the internet. The only advantage to online storage is that your folks back home can have live updates and see how the trip is going through your photos.
Reply to this Uploading photos to the internet for
storage purposes really isn't practical - even with fast broadband connections upload speeds are not fast enough to do this. Anyone that has spent any time on the road will confirm this - uploading the original photos for online storage via internet cafés or hotel connections is not feasible when taking even a below average number of shots per day.
There are three main things that you may want to do with your photos while on the road.
Share your photos - let those back home see the photos more or less as you take them. Travelblog (or flickr et. al.) are perfect for this - and you don't need to send 12mb photo files to do this - that's why our fast photo upload is so fast - we don't upload the original image - but a resized version.
Allow printing of your photos - the major online photoshops (snapfish, photobox) all allow prints to be ordered over the web. It more than likely won't be you ordering those - but a strategy of uploading a small number of your best shots at full size to these services will be fine - or as most do - wait until you're back at home and have the time to organise and print the best photos only.
Archive your photos - after the time and investment spent taking the shots - make sure you keep them when an unnamed airline loses your bags - two basic strategies - burn 2 copies to DVD/CD and send 1 home - or burn and send 1 copy and keep the rest on
Portable Hard Drives or a laptop.
