Day 13, 14, and 15, the last few days of our trip.
It seems like Ireland is a great place for phalic symbols. In Dublin next to the river there is an....hmm, lets say, controversial structure. This spire points up to the heavens, but looks rather out of place, although I am sure some people will object to my assumption. It has however acquired an interesting name over the years: Stiffy by the Liffey, and is regarded by some as a phallic symbol. At the very least it has become a talking point and many people meet there, as it is so easy to see.
We had to leave the streets of Dublin behind, as we had to catch a ferry back to Holyhead, then drive to Darwin to drop off the 'bus' - a nickname for the Hyundai that we hired. Quite strange to think our Ireland trip was coming to an end. Waiting for the ferry to dock, we were still amazed at its sheer size. The only ferry I know of in South Africa is the ferry to Robben island and the ferries in our neighbouring countries in Africa are of a different league
to this one. I still think the African ferries have more character but the spaciousness of these ferries are something to behold, considering they can transport numerous busses, trucks and cars. We have travelled on a fair number of different ferries before, but they still amaze me.
It fellt quit surreal to be back in the UK, because this meant just a couple more days, then we would be heading home. We dropped off the car then drove back to Ambleside. Stopped along the way for a delicious Italian meal. After all the travelling, we were exhausted that evening, especially Clive who did all the driving, and headed for bed as soon as we got to Ambleside.
The next day was another beautiful day, so we decided to walk around Windermere. We wanted to do this walk right at he beginning of our trip before we went to Ireland, but the weather was against us just for that day. What a beautiful way to end our trip. We walked to Waterhead, caught a ferry to Wray Castle, then walked to Ferrynab, caught another ferry across to Bowness Pier, had lunch, tea and scones at
St Martins. Then caught a third ferry, each one different, back to Waterhead. A long walk, that tired us all out, but was well worth it, because the scenery was breathtaking.
To finish off our trip we celebrated with a Thai dinner in Ambleside - yum! The next day we had a couple of hours to kill before heading to the airport in Manchester, so we made a last stop at one of my favourite shops - Lakelands. Luckily I had a weight restriction for my luggage, because I was very tempted to buy a number of kitchen gadgets. One more pub lunch just outside Manchester in a quaint little pub, that was next to a canal, with beautiful canal boats (have to add that to my bucket list of travels - a canal boat trip), then off to the airport and farewell to Karen & Clive. We will miss you!
