Well the journey continues and this time bringing us to the UK. For me a home coming, and for Dean at times flashes of the New Zealand beauty. We have really enjoyed our time here. We decided on buying a car and managed to pick up a great little Citroen for £500. We had also decided before arriving that we would like to camp, so my cousin Tina very kindly loaned us a tent and air mattress, so with the car loaded up we set off on our UK adventure.
After nearly six weeks on the road and having done 3600 miles, we have seen, and have been to, some of the most beautiful places. You could spent so much time here just wandering around, there is so much to see and do. Who knows one day we may be back, to see the places that we have missed.
After visiting the UK in the summer a few years back, this time we have enjoyed the Autumn colours. The weather has been very kind to us, and we managed to camp most nights, including a couple where we woke to a very severe frost. Ice on the inside of
the tent is a sure sign that we should stay in the old sleeping bags for just a little longer. Even so after being in Asia and the heat, it has been so nice to enjoy the cooler weather.
We have visited Cambridge, where we enjoyed walking around the old University town, had seen the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest, as well as the beautiful old city of York, have enjoyed the lovely countryside of the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands, the ruggard Islands of the Outer Hebrides as well as the rolling hills of Wales and Somerset. We had walked along the beaches of Cornwall, Devon and Sussex. The whole time enjoying the beautiful autumn colours of the oak, chestnut and birch trees. We have shared the woods with the Deer, Squirrels and pheasants, as well as enjoyed the Walnuts, Almonds, Chestnuts and Blackberries that the woods offer.
We have walked miles across hills, up mountains, through woods and along the Yorkshire and Devon cliff tops. We have enjoyed picnics next to the lochs in Scotland, a Roast dinner in a thatched cottage in Nottingham, a devonshire tea ( with clotted cream) in Devon, Cornish pasties
in Cornwall, fish & chips on the Island of Skye, haggis on a very chilly street in Edinburgh and a Scottish pie at the rugby.
We have camped on lots of farms, and had shared our space with chickens, horses, ducks, cows, rabbits, doves and seagulls.
We have also added to our forms of transport used, having ridden horses, used a stream bus and the car ferry.
We have met some lovely people along the way, and have been very fortunate to spend some time with my family. We have managed to catch up with Dominic once again as well as Alex another Brit who we met in Cambodia, we have also spent a couple of days with the brother and his wife of a good friend of ours in Perth (Martin). They have a lovely home in Sidmouth and showed us some beautiful sights and villages nearby, taking us to a really old pub for a great dinner and we also enjoyed some really nice walks with them. Dean has also managed to catch up with an old friend from Christchurch who he has not seen in seventeen years, Dave McAlister and his family, who now
live in Edinburgh.
So another part of our journey is now over, and with our little car now sold, it is time for the next leg of the journey. Finland here we come. The journey continues............
