Whitesands and Ramsey Island
Looking from the top of Carn Llidi, just like an illustrated map laid out before us We went to St Davids in south west Wales for Easter. We stayed at The Waterings B&B. We had stayed there before for Nick and Vicky's wedding - so we knew that we had a great place to stay! It took us over 5 hours to get there due to the amount of traffic on the roads, we also stopped for about 40 mins for lunch. Once we arrived we took a stroll into St Davids and down to the Cathedral. It is such a pretty area with the Cathedral tucked into a small valley, it has grass around it and grave stones, and looks really pretty in the sunshine with the hills and countryside behind it. There is still a crane behind it too, and work is still going on at the Bishop's Palace. We wandered around for a little while, and then walked back up to The Grove hotel/pub/restaurant and had a little drink before heading back to our room. We ate at The Grove that evening. On Saturday morning just as we were leaving the breakfast room our friend Nick called. He and Vicky were in St Davids for Easter seeing Nick's family. He didnt believe we
were in St Davids - and asked David to prove it over the phone - David was at a bit of a loss about how to do that! Anyway, Nick gave us directions to get to his parent's house and so we walked to the other side of St Davids (the smallest city in the UK). Nick's parents are great - very hospitable and welcoming. We sat on their patio for an hour or so chatting in the sunshine. We were sheltered from the wind - so it was lovely and warm, even a bit hot! Nick's dad showed me around the garden, including the area for vegetables and the greenhouse with a vine - from which their next door neighbour made four bottles of wine last year! Nick's mother gave us some hot cross buns - so it was all quite perfect! Nick's sister and her two children were there too, as was Nick's brother Bowsy (Martin). Nick then drove us to Whitesands beach, where we parked the car and with Vicky and Bowsy we walked a little bit along the coastal path. It was truly stunningly beautiful. It was better than our coastal walk in Polperro, Cornwall a
few weeks before. We walked from Whitesands to St Davids Head. It was an easy walk with great views of Ramsey Island. It was quite busy - with a number of other people enjoying the walk too. We then walked to Carn Llidi - this is a little hill/peak thingy - with absolutely superb views of the whole surrounding coast and countryside. Vicky is pregnant so only came half way up with us... we kept looking back and waving at her, I was easy to spot because I was wearing a bright orange top, but once I put on my warmer top it was not so easy for her to identify us from the other groups of people. As we climbed higher and higher (it was not a difficult walk) the view was wonderful - it was like an illustrated map laid out before us. It was really wonderful. The last little bit was a bit too scarey for me - not being good with heights. It was quite steep and I thought I would be able to get up, but not sure about getting down. Then Nick noticed a path around the back of Carn Llidi and encouraged me
Another view from Carn Llidi
You can see, what I think, are the old Iron Age fields to try that to get up to the last few metres to the top. I had to take a few deep breaths and conquer my irrational fear of heights, and with encouragement from the others (Nick must have got a bit tired of my delaying tactics becuase he said something along the lines of 'If you dont come up here I will come and put my head up your bottom to get you up'... he has a way with words as you can tell! But anyway I got up there and indeed the view was great - you could see 360 degrees around and even could see St Davids and beyond. We stayed up there for quite a little while taking it all in. You could see the old field system of Iron Age Celts laid out below us with stone walls dividing the fields. Nick and Bowsy grew up in St Davids so for them it was pretty normal I guess, what a great place to grow up! We climbed down and met Vicky and then walked back to Whitesands, on the way back we saw some wild ponies. Nick and the others went in to have lunch with
their parents, and David and I walked back into St Davids and had a fish and chip takeaway lunch. After lunch we went for a drink with Nick and Vicky to The Farmers and sat outside in the sunshine. That evening we met up with Nick, Vicky, Bowsy and Billy and Helen (Billy also grew up in St Davids and with his wife Helen and their lovely daughter Eden were spending Easter with his family) and had a drink or two. On Sunday morning we all met at Billy's parent's house, which was about 3 mins from our B&B. We walked to Caerfai beach - just about 10 mins down the road, the tide was in but we could get onto the pebbles and there was a little bit of sand too. I paddled in the FREEZING cold water as did Vicky and Eden too. Eden is only about 18 months ish and very sweet. Billy helped her paddle - he kept his trainers on though! There were proper waves so it was fun! I sat in the sunshine after that warming up my feet and drying them with a towel that Vicky had given me for that very purpose!
Then we walked back up to the cliff edge and into St Davids to have some FABULOUS ice cream. I had honey and ginger - it was lovely. I had wanted to go paddling and have an ice cream whilst in St Davids - so it was just perfect! David and I went and had a lovely veggie Sunday lunch at The Grove, and then went to back to our B&B for a lazy afternoon. It got quite cold and sligthly misty that evening. The next morning though was beautifully sunny again and bright. I took some photos of the grounds of The Waterings before we left for our return journey home - which only took us just under four hours because we left early just after breakfast and so the roads were much clearer. It was a great Easter - the weather and the scenery and seeing people we haven't seen for a while.
