Good morning…. had my first ever kipper in butter sauce for breakfast. Very nice too… apart from the millions of bones, too fine to pull you just have to eat them… Grant had the black pudding with his usual, well liked also. So windy Wellington, – there is definitely a contender for your WINDY sign. Here. Of course the windiest spot in Edinburgh is where they have the tourist bus stops. I said to the girl whose job it was to wrangle and ticket the tourists . “You need a nice glass shelter here” she said “We had one until about 3 years ago, “Don’t tell me the wind blew it away”, I said. “I was standing under it at the time, just shattered and fell on our heads, they stopped the buses that day!” Funny people… Like most cities there are the hop on hop off tourist buses. Here, there are four and so user friendly with wonderful commentaries and friendly staff. We caught the blue one today and sadly I realised we would not be here long enough to do them all. We stopped at the Botanic gardens and although the glass houses were closed due to the winds.
(Not taking any more chances there) we had a good walk around to get the feel of the place. Probably the nicest Bot garden I’ve been too. I guess it’s the climate but the colours seem to be so more saturated. I guess not enough sun to wash them out. I don’t think I have seen such a large display of perennials anywhere. They use the covered earth policy all plants and no weeds. I took a photo of an agapanthus called Windsor Castle – need to see if we can get that in NZ…what a colour.
Next stop on the blue line; Britannia. Was really looking forward to this as a royalist and watching that boat sail around the world since I was a little girl. Didn’t realise however that she had been to NZ 7 times. When she was decommissioned in 1997 she had done a million miles or equivalent to an around the world for every year she was operating. Run by 200 + crew. It was a great tour through the boat. Everything now looking very retro but so pristine. I particularly loved the cane chairs in the sun room; picked up by
Prince Phillip in Hong Kong in the 60’s… Can’t explain the single beds they really are single not even king single. An interconnecting door but a single bed when you get to the other side…. hmmm. In fact there is one double bed on the whole ship and that was bought on by Price Charles for his honeymoon. However, I now know I need to get our sheets especially run up for our bed, it seems the Queen and I, as Grant will attest, like a bigger turn down.
On the way home stopped at a bar obviously frequented by a young hip crowd and had a Naked Grouse. To make at home: -
Naked Grouse 2 nips of Grouse whisky 1 nip apricot liqueur
Splash rhubarb bitters ½ nip of apple juice, lemon juice and egg white
