Afternoon tea at the Rhubarb at Prestonfield House
August 1st was my birthday, so to celebrate, I made us some breakfast (hey wait, how did that happen?) and Cor and I hit the streets to go shopping again (yes, I know, we're not doing anything really touristy, but that's the point of this trip). Cor bought a few things, including some Paul Smith stuff, from Jenners/House of Fraser and then we checked out the mall.

We had a reservation at the Rhubarb at Prestonfield House for afternoon tea because that's what I REALLY wanted to do for my birthday. So looking at the map, I saw that it looked like it wasn't far from where my friend used to live and thought that we could easily make the trek. 40 minutes at a ridiculously fast pace and ripped up feet later, we made it to the grounds of Prestonfield House....which looked fantastic. We were escorted to the 'Tapestry Room' (which isn't just a clever name - the walls are covered in tapestries) in order to take our tea. I chose Breakfast Assam, which was really good, and Cor chose Gunpowder which is a type of green tea that he wasn't really a fan of. The spread was also delicious, with sandwiches, dainties, and scones with what seemed like homemade jam and clotted cream (my favourite!!). At 17GBP, it was definitely worth it. I was amazed though, I've had tea at the Hotel Saskatchewan in Regina, but other than the ambiance, which they could not compete with, I thought that the Hotel Sk. put on a good afternoon tea compared to this (for $19). We spent a couple of hours there, and whe we left, we definitely took a taxi.

After we stopped back at the flat, we headed back to Jeckyll and Hyde's so that I could have more deadly sins (I had pride and lust which was super sweet). Then we headed over to my favourite pub on West Crosscausway called the Greenmantle. There was a band that were sitting around playing, and we all had yummy burgers and chips for supper. We meant to move on earlier, but some how, we ended up shutting it down at 1AM (the Greenmantle is just that good!), so we then moved on to the Jazz Bar on Chambers St.(this was the originally where we were going to go earlier because Mondays are big band night), which was really

busy. We stuck around there for a bit, listened to some tunes, watched some gross dude pick up this girl (she'll regret that tomorrow), and then we headed home.

On Tuesday, we woke up to rain. Lame! We met Tom and Jemma and finally had our Scottish pig in a bun at Oink on Victoria. You could choose from add ons of sage dressing or haggis, and chili sauce or apple sauce, as well as the size of your piggy bun and if you want crackling. We we lucky enough to get a table as there is no room at all in the tiny restaurant (if you are going to go at all, plan on having take away). I had a normal oink, with sage dressing, and apple sauce, and it was GOOD!! Cor got crackling (the skin)....Jemma also did, but was instantly grossed out by the thickness of it as well as the hairs, but Cot enjoyed it. So just make sure that you want a reminded of the fact that you are eating an animal if you get it 😊

Because it was raining, we thought that we would keep things to indoors, so we checked

out the newly opened wing of the National Museum of Scotland (where I also went last year). We checked out the Egyptian and Pacific displays, as well as the animal sections. It was pretty cool, but you would definitely need multiple days to go through it.

Afterwards, we grabbed some tickets for a couple of Fringe shows (even though Fringe doesn't technically start until the 5th, some shows do start early) at the box office just off the Royal Mile. We're going to the Billie Holiday story on Wednesday, as well as Margaret Cho on Thursday. We'll see how that goes....

Finally, we hit up the Whiski on the Mile for supper, so that I could have my sausage and mash. Then we headed to the Banshee Labyrinth on Niddry St.(just off the Mile and the Cowgate), which is super creepy if you go through the whole thing. The lower parts of it (apparently, it used to be part of the vaults under Edinburgh) have low ceilings and look like dungeons. I guess it's one of the most haunted pubs in Edinburgh. Oddly enough, they also have a cinema there, so we enjoyed our drinks while watching Ghostbusters.

Cor had brie and bacon on his bison burger, and some how he ended up with onion rings and chips. Lucky!
Yes, we are weird 😊
