Nobody told us about the climb out of Kinlochleven!!! I suppose common sense told you that after descending so far down and being surrounded by mountains - there was only one way out. But it was still a shock first thing in the morning. We were all huffing and puffing by the time we got to the top to look behind us at Kinlochleven and the river.
The rain was persistent all day and we were literally walking through running water. We were all prepared with our waterproofs and so it wasn't a real problem, especially as we knew this was our last day of walking and we would soon be at Heather and Nicks to chill for a couple of days.
The rain stopped for awhile as we approached a small brook and John decided this would be the last chance he and Clive would have to take a dip before the end of the walk, so they stripped off (I kid you not) and got into the freezing cold water. As you would expect, our fellow walkers thought they were absolutely mad - as indeed they are. Sally and I took videos of their antics (for those
of you interested - for a small fee), which was just as well because they got out before Dave and Frank caught us up and would never have believed us. We stopped beside the water for our lunch before heading off again.
The walk then took us up into deep, dark, spooky forests. The ground was really soft and covered in pine needles and moss. It really was beautiful to see. As usual, towards to the end of the walk, we had another really difficult climb out of the trees and into the open air with a view over Fort William. We then had a long path down towards the town to our final point.
We met Chris and Maggie at the finishing post, which was lovely as we had been meeting up with them on and off all through the week. We took photos and said our goodbyes and headed off for Dalcomera and The Shores.
It was lovely to see Heather again and as expected, Nick was in the bath, but did get straight back out again to meet us. We got settled and had a wonderful green thai curry for our evening meal and
sat and talked about our adventures during the last week.
Nick, John, Clive and Dave took the boat out next morning to do some fishing on Loch Ochy. They saw ospreys, stags and Clive caught a trout! They had a great time. Us girls and Frank went into Fort William to do some shopping as the sales were on. We had a nice wander and then headed back for some lush homemade soup for lunch.
That evening, we caught the train from Spean Bridge to Corrour, which is a halt/station that has been converted to a restaurant right out in the middle of nowhere. It's the only piece of land in Scotland that is 5 miles by 2 miles without any public roads going through it. It was a great experience with fantastic surroundings.
The men got up early on Saturday morning and went out in the boat again. Sarah (Nick and Heathers daughter) arrived at 10am and we all got ready to go on a drive to Skye. Unfortunately, Sally didn't get to see a lot of the scenery as we drove to Skye as she took one of Sarahs travel sickness pills and it knocked
her out completely! We will have to show here the photos. The rain didn't let up all day and spoilt the views a little. We stopped for chips just before we crossed the bridge to the Isle of Skye. What we could see of Skye looked very picturesque and made us consider doing a tour of the islands next year. We caughter a ferry back off the island to Mallaig and then back to Gair Lochy.
We left Nick, Heather and Sarah on Sunday for our return home. We had a great trip, but it was made even nicer for the couple of days that we stayed at Dalcomera. We will all miss them, but look forward to seeing them all again soon.
