Today we are flying from Dubai (DXB) to London Gatwick (LGW) with Emirates on the A380 Double-decker again. This is a major thrill for us and a distance of just under 4000 miles.
We have been presented with a very very tough decision today- Upon online check in with Emirates, they have offered us a business class upgrade for £450.00 each. We did not accept this is we can find absolutely nothing wrong with normal Emirates economy class. Had we have won the big one on the national lottery, we may have accepted it though.
With a flight at 8.00am, we left the hotel in a taxi at about 4.45am. Roads were surprisingly busy at this time of the morning, but we were already aware that Dubai is a 24/7 city.
The check-in was very straightforward, although we did cause a few issues. Both our hold and our hand luggage were very slightly overweight. Emirates have a strict policy of 7 kilos hand luggage. As we were so early though, they did not appear too worried about it. Our hand luggage was weighed twice shock horror. The 7 kilos may sound draconian but the hold baggage is a
massive 30 kilos per person so draw your own conclusions.
Once through all the formalities, we headed for Burger King and used our final Entertainer voucher of the visit. Not a traditional breakfast, but it was nice and tasty.
Once we were all on board the Emirates A380 that was taking us back to London Gatwick, we were delayed by about an hour and a half as they could not get the computer for the entertainment system working and had to replace it. The rest of the flight was smooth and uneventful. The A380 can carry around 600 passengers and we could not believe it was around half empty. For the flight, we were cruising at 42,000 feet and reached a whopping 600 mph / kts at some stages.
Once through the formalities at London Gatwick and having collected our luggage, we headed to Europcar as we have a car hired from them for our one day in UK. They gave us a Fiat 500, but tried to sell us something bigger as they said our three hold bags and two cabin bags would not fit very well into the little Fiat. We are very good at
getting lots of bags into small cars and managed to achieve this without rearranging any of the seats.
Tonight, we stayed at the Premier Inn on the A30 at Bagshot, Surrey, so we went straight there to drop off our bags. From there, we went to Tesco in the Meadows, Sandhurst to pick up some of the items that are more expensive in Tenerife. As Theresa had been over to UK a couple of months ago, the list of items we need this time is a lot smaller than normal. This trip there is only one case of shopping from UK rather than the normal six.
Then we had a quick last KFC, so that George could have his final fix, before heading back to the hotel to literally flake out.
